Superman - The Movie: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Music

In association with Amazon.com

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Excellent!
Other than the over kill of "Can you read my mind", an excellent collection.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Hector, about the liner notes...
I have the previous edition, and the notes that came with it were nestled next to the CD in a thick booklet (with a cover of Reeve in front of an American flag) that was large enough for the slipcase cover, but too big to fit into the CD case front. Otherwise, the one-sheet cover that came with your soundtrack is identical to the slipcase version.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Flawless
This is John Williams at his finest. This music is so indescribably good, it's a marvel that with each listen it retains it's brilliance. This is what all film music should aspire to be like.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - John Williams At His Best
Superman:The Movie, was a movie that broke barriers in the effects department. It was a movie that broke, at the time, box office records. Not only did the movie do well but so did it's soundtrack however it was incomplete. It was sold as a 2 album LP but only a few stuff appeared. For years, movie buffs, historians, collectors were complaining because it wasn't the complete full length album. They were begging for the complete album. They signed a petition to Warner Brothers asking why and why did you jip us all these years?

So, after years of asking and writing in, Warner Brothers decided to finally give the fans what they want. A two disc edition was released and this IS the complete album. The one the fans wanted all along. Was it worth the wait? Yes as not only does this have every song featured in the film, it's also got extended tracks, unreleased, alternates, bonuses, a book explaining where each song fits in the film, and all the songs are in order.

Now, at the time, John Williams was fresh off Star Wars and very much in demand (still is)and when he approached Superman, he wanted something that made you believe in him. He wanted a march. Something like a hero march. Believe it or not, he took his inspiration from Wagner and 2001: A Space Oddeysy. He took that theme and used it as the opening of the Superman theme. Listen carefully for it.

The Superman Theme is one of the most well known pieces of music and was nominated for original score. But I find that the most beautifuel piece on the whole album is The Flying Sequence (The Love Theme). As a bonus, it's featured without the words as well as a pop single. You'll notice the difference in it if you pay close attention. Another fun one is March of the Villians. It has a comedic feel to it which was purposley done as Otis was the "bumbling idiot" to Lex's straight man.

All in all, it's a great album that will go down as one of the greatest. One has to wonder though how it would have turned out had someone else scired it.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Great music, but incomplete packaging?
I have lusted after this edition of the Superman: The Movie soundtrack ever since it originally came out back in 2000. I was heartbroken when I found that it very quickly went out of print and became a rather hard-to-find item in the market, commanding $75-$100 price tags from third-party sellers.

I was ecstatic when it just very recently became available again (no doubt to take advantage of the new Superman Returns movie coming out next month) and just got my hands on it today. I'm listening to it right now as I write this and it is an absolute joy to experience. You'd certainly be hard-pressed to find a grander, more memorable set of music for a comic-book character (or any character, really!) Just aces.

However, I'm more than a little disappointed at how this recent pressing seems to lack the rather extensive liner notes that originally came with this edition in 2000(all it has is a single paper slip with the cover on the front and a B&W photo of Jor-El and Lara on the reverse). I'm a little baffled by this and would like to know if anyone has any info regarding this situation. Are all copies lacking the notes, or is it just that I had the bad luck of getting an incomplete copy and should return it for a replacement? Any help would be appreciated...

Liner notes (or lack thereof) notwithstanding, the music on this CD is quite simply brilliant, both technically and creatively. Plus the chronological listing of tracks and bonus material are an added treat for completists. So, the music gets 5+ stars, but the packaging (with the missing booklet) brings it down a notch. Still, a great buy, especially if you have a soft spot for the Big Guy, like me.
