The movie Total Eclipse starring Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the most briliant i've ever laid eyes upon!!!! It's a little darker than usual for him but, that just shows off his versitality! He's not just a Romeo anymore!!!!!!!!! He is one of the best actors i've ever seen in any movie at any age! The movie itself is quite the masterpeice! It has love, hate, comedy, passion, and realism. True human emotions in a story of a real human being who was quite the brilliant poet and lover of life!
Born with a special gift he used only for a short while but, nevertheless immortalized him in literature! I commend Leonardo for his performance in this film! Brilliant acting with a bit of an in your face sence to it! Not many actors could pull off a roll such as this with as much class as he did! Stepping out from a conventional type cast roll is a major acheivement for any actor and he did it superbly!!!!!! The relationship between these two poets is somewhat hard for me to grasp as they were like night and day but, as they say "opposites attract". I am in no way condoning homosexuality or bi- sexuality but, then again i'm in no position to condem it either? It's part of the story and therefore part of the films charm! I'd recommend this film to anyone with enthusiasm and hope you all appriciate it's truth as much as i do! If you are a lover of the strange or poetry, arts and artists then you should enjoy this film emmensily! If not ... then you'll enjoy watcing the change in Leonardo's character. If none of the above then oh well, i tried! Only one last thing to add..... BRAVO LEO!!!!!! JOB WELL DONE!!!!!!1

Holland's Total Eclipse is one of those movies that has fallen victim to critical badmouthing, but it is not to be overlooked. DiCaprio finds himself in his performance of a lifetime as the young, volatile, intelligent French poet, Arthur Rimbaud. Thewlis also gives a remarkable performance as Verlaine, the object of Rimbaud's manipulation. They share poetry and a bed, and while the film has been criticized for its sexual presentation, it is a necessary part of the intriguing story Holland tells. In truth, Rimbaud's life is as captivating as his poetry. DiCaprio pushed the envelope in this film and should be commended. It is an essential piece for fans of Queer cinema, but it should be viewed by all lovers of France, of poetry, of thinking, and of the delicate balance of human action and emotion.

This movie about the steamy, stormy relationship between early 20th Century French poets Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine fails on a number of levels. Considering the talent involved in front of and behind the camera, the film is a bit of am embarrassment.
Verlaine was a widely respected poet when he invited the very young [16 or 17] to visit him and his family in Paris. They developed a volatile friendship that became a torrid love affair. In the process, they destroyed Verlaine's marriage and reputation. Their escapades also cost him two years in prison. Rimbaud wrote brilliantly but only for a few years. He wound up gun running in Africa and died of cancer in his mid-30s.
Their tale has the makings of a powerful drama, but "Total Eclipse" forgoes this opportunity by focusing on the more shocking aspects of the relationship. In the process, both characters come off as vain and selfish. In Rimbaud's case, this can perhaps be justified by his youth, his genius and his homosexuality in a repressed society. An actor such as Ewan McGregor might have pulled the role off, but Leonardo DiCaprio, though excellent in several other movies, seems lost here because his anger and angst feels like that of a California kid. David Thewlis is also up the creek, but for a different reason. As written, his Verlaine is so smarmy and reprehensible that he's impossible to relate to. After a scene of horrendous cruelty towards his wife and infant, one wishes he would go ahead with his threats to blow his brains out.
There is zero chemistry between DiCaprio and Thewlis. This makes is hard to figure out what attracted the two poets to each other, especially since little is made of their intellectual bond.
Perhaps the biggest mistake the movie makes is to assume that the audience will give the characters a break because they are artists. This is problem because there are few direct references to the poetry that made them famous. In "Amadeus", we also were presented with a crass, prissy, childish genius as the central character. That movie succeeded because Mozart's glorious music was featured throughout and because there was a great deal of humor. "Total Eclipse" takes itself seriously without ever giving any serious insights into either Verlaine or Rimbaud.

He doesn't die. He's not all sappy, He actually acts. I never thought he had it in him. As you can probably tell, but I'm not much of a Leonardo DiCaprio fan, but in this movie, he demonstrates that there is a reason he became an actor and it wasn't from looks and for his ability to die well.
This movie is based on the true story of the 19th century French poets, Paul Verlaine and Arthur Rimbaud. It is the story of a volatile romantic triangle of the two poets and and Paul Verlaine's wife, set in early period era. The movie illustrates the cruelty of genius and the constant creative forces that exist within an artist.
Definately a movie to see and add to your collection.

OUI!
That sad tale of 'forbidden love' enhanced by spiritual visitations.....well, 'Bravo' to DiCaprio and Thewlis [who is quite a powerful actor - don't underrate this theapian!] for daring to do this work in somewhat 'graphic' mode - rivals some of the Genet visitations, and in some ways quite similar, but naturally earlier.
I suppose that all Great poets must suffer! Something along those lines, but this is an interesting slant.
Bold choices by the always innovative Annieszka Holland.
See this one with just a tiny glass of the 'green fairy' ['Absente'] on the cocktail table! [The 'Moulin Rouge' was never this hot!]
and for more relish? Thewlis in "Naked"!
