The Monkees - Greatest Hits Music

In association with Amazon.com

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great CD
I bought this for my sister at Christmas. She said it sounded good and it had a booklet with info on The Monkees. Had all of their hits except one: "Tapioca Tundra" (don't remember it).

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - MONKEE SHINES
THE MONKEES-GREATEST HITS: Just like that other irresistible confectionary treat Sara Lee, nobody, it seems, doesn't like the Monkees. Sure, they were dubbed the "Pre-Fab Four" and granted, they played nary a note on their biggest sellers (I suspect that Davy was even faking the tambourine). Yet they rose above the teen idol/bubblegum tag and churned out some of the best damn 60's singles this side of the Grass Roots and Paul Revere and the Raiders. Neil Diamond, Carole King, and Boyce and Hart were just a few of the top drawer composers and Glen Campbell and Leon Russell examples of the session cream utilized by svengali Don Kirshner to produce AM paydirt. GREATEST HITS ably covers each period of the Monkees' all too brief career, from early singalong classics LAST TRAIN TO CLARKSVILLE and DAYDREAM BELIEVER through their "adult" phase PORPOISE SONG, LISTEN TO THE BAND to their better than average 80's reunion efforts THAT WAS THEN THIS IS NOW and HEART AND SOUL. Hear Peter share a rare lead vocal with Mickey on WORDS! Witness Davy and a punchy brass section kick some serious hiney on VALLERI! Savor a version of I'M A BELIEVER that shreds SHREK's take to ribbons! This anthology is more fun than a barrel full of...Nope! Forget it. Giddy as I feel after spinnin' this delightful disc of pure pop perfection, you can't make me say it! RATING: FIVE BANANAS

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - There good
I must admit my favirote group outsiede of Christian rock is the Beatles just cheack out Rubbersoul and the white album out. The monkeys had some good songs Im a Beliver and Daydream believer to name a few. There good, but to compare them to the Beatles music is silly. GodBless

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Good Overview of an Under-rated Band.
While this is far from being a complete overview of the band's career, for the occasional Monkees listener it is a good introduction to the Monkee's catalog. As with any greatest hits collections, there will be people who invariably scream about this song being left out, or that song not belonging on a greatest hits record, etc. I'm not going to bother with this, as mostly this is a matter of personal taste and a somewhat arbitrary judgement call anyway.

For those people who are not familiar with the Monkees outside of their television show, this album is a good introduction to some of their other material that may not have seen the light of day on Saturday Mornings (or Monday Nights, if you were watching back in 1966). This compilation appears to draw relatively evenly across the Monkees albums, taking about 3 songs from each of the studio albums (before Instant Replay),and adding several singles that didn't make the albums. Given the strength of some of these singles, it's strange that they never made it on the albums. In addition to the earlier works, there are several songs from the "Newly Reformed Monkees", namely Davy, Peter, and Mickey as support for their 20th anniversary tour in 1986. Although I'm not a fan of the songs, they are kind of cute, in a way.

Anyway, like I said, this album is a very good introduction to the work of the band, but I wouldn't consider it a comprehensive overview of their careers, nor as a complete retrospective. Therefore, if you are not familiar with the Monkees total work, this is a good place to get your feet wet and find out what their music is really like, but if you are already a Monkees fan, I would stick with the original albums, as the re-issues have added bonus material that encompasses much of the singles that didn't make the albums the first time around.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - cbchambers
this is a great album with the exception of the two last songs... completely undermines the idea that the monkees were not talented... the songwriting by boyce & hart, carol king, and others is some of the finest by anyone - including lennon and mccartney.
