Finding Serenity: Anti-Heroes, Lost Shepherds and Space Hookers in Joss Whedon's Firefly (Smart Pop series) Books

In association with Amazon.com

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Amazing how far you can get ripping off someone else.
A scholarly work on the content of Firefly? Amazing how far you can get from just ripping off with very few minor changes the concepts behind an anime called Outlaw Star.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Some good, some better, some... not so good.
The cancellation of Firefly left many questions unanswered, and many theories on character back-story and motivation are expounded upon in this collection. The essays, edited by series writer and long-time Joss Whedon co-conspirator Jane Espenson, were all written in the period of time between the end of the series and the release of Serenity, which gives the book a quaintly episodic feel in an I-know-something-you-don't-know sort of way.

The essays themselves are something of a mixed bag - if you're a fan of the show, at least one of them is pretty much guaranteed to piss you off. But fans will appreciate contributions from other long-time Whedon co-conspirator Marti Noxon, and a sweetly nostalgic accounting of favorite moments from actress Jewel Staite.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Fun little book of essays
After FOX cancelled the sci-fi show Firefly, fans were clamoring for anything Firefly related. Myself included.

So when BenBella books published Finding Serenity, I was overjoyed to have another chance to revisit characters and settings from the show.

The book is chock-full of critical analysis essays (re: nitpicking good and bad things about the show). Although the essays are technically academic-like, they're also witty and engaging. None of the essays get dry or boring, and some of the essays are written by non-writers, so they've got a very interesting perspective on things.

Like one essay is written by Jewel Staite, who played Kaylee on Firefly. She mostly reminisces about her experiences on set, which is fun to read, and not analytical in the slightest.

This book of essays has something for every Firefly fan, and even though you won't agree with all the authors' points--you may be arguing with the book at times--it's a fun way to keep the 'verse alive.

If you like this book, good news: A sequel of similarly-styled essays, called Serenity Found, just came out.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - They always take off the best shows!!
This was a great and inventive TV show...too bad they didn't see fit to give it another chance. The movie was wonderful...check out the DVD's for the movie and series!! You'll find them here on Amazon...

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Keeping Firefly alive
Good reading material for a fresh outlook on a series that should still be in existance.
