Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Everything you wanted to know about the Cult of Skaro,..but were afraid to ask
What's in a name....well The latest in the encyclopedia style field guide to the Doctor Who universe is here to do just that name names and "I name thee Carrionite!..."

Previous editions, "Monsters and Villains" and "Aliens and Enemies" presented background about creatures, characters and races appearing throughout the series 40+ year history in glossy DK fast-fact photo book style. This time included most recent appearance of the Daleks in Manhattan, with preproduction paintings of the Cult of Skaro's underground lair and the Empire State Building. Also include New School baddies like the Macbeth witches a.k.a the Carrionites, who have an extensive, backstory, to the old-school monsters included are: the Ogrons and the Draconians from the Pertwee years, the waspy Wirrn and the creepy Krynoid from the Baker years, and more.

Previous editions, presented the fictitious material in a sort of "non-fiction" manner. This time around the publishers include more pre-production and script related material, conceptual drawings and all, which is cool, but does break the guide-book illusion created successfully by the first two volumes.

The book series one weakness is that at times, for lesser creatures, the information wears thin and entries seem weak, for example the electric personality of the Wire (from the Idiot's Lantern) and the Olympic torch-ridin' Isolus (from Fear Her). The Daleks, of course, have more than enough info to fill, er...exceed, their text quota.
