Batman: R.I.P. Books

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Batman RIP OFF? Definately...
Grant Morrison has consistently disappointed comic book fans with his titles, including this title, "Final Crisis"and "52. He has mastered the art of jerking comic fans around & stringing us along for the purpose of selling more comics and worthless tie-ins.

Yes, promises are made and not kept, and the faithful blind fanboys that defend his work while reading these stories through rose-colored lenses just exclaim, "He's telling a bigger story and maybe he'll finish telling it later on." Well, you guys keep buying his $4.00 an issue comic books and the rest of us sensible fans will read complete honest stories.

A story about Batman without Batman is a pretty bad story, not to mention the joker thrown in to entertain us and pass the time until the final issue.

And in the end, we get a half-boiled story and nothing is resolved. Tune in to Final Crisis #6 to find out what happens to Batman.

I'll tell you since its on the front cover. Batman gets killed......I lied, no he doesn't. He gets shot with magic eye beams by a god and sent back in time to live with the cavemen.......True story.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - The mind of Batman
This was a pretty good book. It was drawn pretty well and if you really like Batman then you'll love this book. It goes to show you Batman is not only strong of body but also of mind.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Worth the Time Investment Neeed
I do not read the Batman comics as they are released, and while I do enjoy comic books/graphic novels, I'm far from steeped in their lore. I read RIP according to a program that a more knowledgeable friend of mine prescribed. First I read Batman: The Black Casebook, then I read the Batman comics that precede RIP and only then did I read RIP.

I doubt anyone could enjoy the book as much as I did without going through the same program or knowing a lot about Batman. The key to a work as good as RIP is that it is deeply textured, by which I mean that it uses the history and depth of the characters created in other works and past works as a known background on which to create a new story. It is akin to using Romeo or Hamlet as a character in a new book. If you aren't familiar with the original plays, you simply won't get as much out of the new book. You may not even understand it.

The other thing to know about this book concerns the ending. There are a couple of stories in this hardcover that are actually after the official RIP storyline (they merge into Final Crisis), but I consider them essential to finishing off the character arc started in RIP. The final note is that the ending is purposefully unsatisfying (indeed, Morrison intends to develop on the ending in future Batman issues). It works on a more theoretical level as a discussion of the interaction of order (Batman), chaos (Joker) and simple evil (villain in this piece), but it is not satisfying on a narrative level.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Because the title "Batman BLOWS" was already taken . . .
Grant Morrison is an excellent writer, having written JLA, the Invisibles, New X-Men, and We3.

Likewise, Tony Daniel is a phenomenal artist, having worked on Teen Titans, Spawn, and more.

Batman R.I.P. ...blows.

The artwork is passable, but not great. The story ...blows. Downright awful. Batman is beaten so quickly and so easily, it's laughable. And the addition of two more single-issue stories at the end, that not only have nothing to do with the R.I.P. story, they have nothing to do with any sense of reality - anywhere. Yes, I know Morrison is famous for his `hallucinatory' feel, and non-linear storytelling. Yes, I'm sure his drug use was a lot of fun for HIM. It's just not that fun to READ it.

Bat-Mite? We needed that added to an already nonsense story.
And the villain group, the Black Glove. Really? Bored, rich, euro-trash counts as a villain now?

Don't let the fantastic Alex Ross cover art fool you:

R.I.P. is a bad trip, man.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Smartest comic in years!
In a world plauged by writers like Jeph Loeb and Mark Millar it's nice to know that really smart stories are still being told with comics.

But the biggest flaw is that readers need to know that this is part three of Grant's run which is one long story. There are still atleast two more trades to the run acording to Grant. But well worth the read. And I do belive Grant's run will be like Watchmen when it's all said and done with each time you read it you see new things you didn't see before.
