All Star Superman, Vol. 1 Books

In association with Amazon.com

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A New Take on an Old (Super)Hero
Just finished this -- easy enough since it's a compilation of six stories (vol. 1). It was a different take (modernized) and some of the storylines were a little goofy, but all-in-all it was well worth the 10 bucks and shipping. More than anything, the illustrations and coloring were exceptional -- never has Lois looked so good, the little vixen. And Superman, well... it's hard to screw up the Man of Steel. Jimmy Olsen is an idiot as usual, but still a pal. But I got to hand it to them, this was one of the best Lex Luthor's I've ever seen.

I gave it only four stars because of the loose storylines (they wasted Lois's opportunity at having super powers for a day), and the use of too many "monsters", but otherwise it was very, very good from an old fan's perspective. One last criticism: they picked the worst cover picture they could have used -- it almost put me off buying it -- when there were so many wonderful and powerful illustrations inside (alternate cover for story 1, for instance, which would have doubled their sales, easily).

So... apparently these guys are all from Scotland, and this is their rendition on a modern Superman adaptation. Well, it's okay with me, and I am looking forward to Vol. 2 (which is coming out in paperback on Sept. 25, 2009 but I'm going ahead with a cheap hardback).

Carry on, guys, and good luck. I highly recommend this odd duck.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Morrison's Superman makes me scratch my head
I literally have no idea why this book was so well received expceot for blind Morrison love because if you read it you'll be left with one word.......Huh? The book bounces here and there makes some sense then makes less than no sense. Its strange and people will say that is the reason its good but they would be wrong. You want a good Supes story? Read Loeb's or Johns' Superman. That's good stuff. This is at best slighthy above okay.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - The art is good. The story is weak.
Although the artwork is beautiful. The story has a poor rhythm of jumping around leaving you lost. It all seems very stream of consciousness, as if someone wrote it while being in an altered state. Also the vignettes, that are poorly strung together, make you stretch your imagination to what is possible, even in Superman book.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A HUGE DEPARTURE FROM MOST MODERN GRAPHIC NOVELS
I am an enormous watchmen fan, and this book is almost the exact opposite of that. While watchmen is dark and gritty this book is fun and lighthearted. It is also very emotionally resonant. Be warned though it does get a little weird in places but is still awesome. This is exactly how superman should be portrayed. He is pretty much flawless, just how he was created to be. The art is amazing and makes the emotional scenes much more impactful. This book actually made me like superman again. If you can handle a bunch of zainy time traveling aspects that might turn some off, there is an amazing superman story to be told.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The best modern Superman story
The All Star imprint allows good writers to perform brilliance. Being free from the boundaries of continuity, Grant Morrison has written an outstanding story. With a nod to the Silver Age of Comics, Morrison has woven the outrageous and puerilely wonderful elements of that era with a modern flare.

An excellent addition to the Superman library, even if it is only "fantasy.";)
