Once again the original blows away the remake. I love this flick. All the over the top "Noo Yawk" accents plus a bird's eye view of Manhattan in 1974 are a plus. Walter Matthau as the smelly looking, badly dressed Lieutenant is- as usual- in form as are Robert Shaw and Martin Balsam. This is one of those flicks where familiar faces pop up and you continuously scratch your head asking the inevitable question: "Where do I know that guy?!"
No need to see the unnecessary remake. Just buy this DVD and you are set.

I bought this movie after seeing the advertising posters for the remake on the platform of various stations on the NYC Subway. This struck me as kind of odd, but it piqued my curiosity enough to buy the original film on DVD. As a sometimes strap-hanger, I found the story to be compelling with lots of tension. But what struck me the most was the depiction of New York in its seedy 1970's death-spiral. There are lots of outdated racial and sexist attitudes presented here as well. Others may say that this has kept the movie from aging well but to me, this rounds out the story and firmly lodges it in its setting. Instead of being dated, this movie is burnished. As the price of this particular DVD is really low, it's a great value.

Some movies should be left alone and not redone, this one of those movies...perfect casting, and great dialog make it a sheer pleasure to watch...very gritty look, you see, hear, and feel 1970's New York city, as one of the characters....

I first saw this movie on DVD a couple of months ago on DVD and it ranks as one of my most favorites. Walter Matthau plays Lt. Zachary Garber (which sounds like a cross between "Gerber" and "Garbage"), who is the officer for the NYC subway system. Four hijackers have gotten on board Pelham 1-2-3 with machine guns, and take at least 20 passengers hostage. Garber negotiates with the hijackers calmly, though he's nervous, even though the criminals are giving him a small amount of time to get $1,000,000 rounded up and given to them. The hijackers have made themselves clear (oddly) that if they don't get the money on time, the hostages would be killed. The story is quite funny and dramatic, as there are some lines that could evoke a laugh from viewers. Hector Elizondo, Robert Shaw, and Martin Balsam are excellent as the hijackers. Elizondo's portrayal of "Gray" is excellent, while the character was quite a jerk, Shaw's portrayal of "Blue" was great as well (his negotiating was quite funny). A must have for anyone who is into thrillers such as this. The acting is wonderful, as is the story. There's no special features on this DVD, except for a typical main menu. Another bummer is that the subtitles are not in English; they're in Spanish and French instead. But this movie is still enjoyable and worth watching! Get ready for a thrill ride folks!!
