It helps if you've seen a bunch of older movies so the gags make more sense but it's a very funny movie for everyone. The movie is just gag after gag after gag. It's great!

Most of the things that are good about this movie have been well-covered by previous reviewers and I heartily endorse the view that this a must-see for devotees of 1940s film noir. A few other points can be made, however.
1. Rachel Ward is a knock-out. A true latter-day Marilyn Maxwell.
2. As a general rule, directors should stay behind the camera. Carl Reiner should have followed this rule. He is funny as a butler but falls flat as a Nazi. The ending could have been so much better if Reiner had scaled-down his role and used, for example, clips from Vincent Sherman's 1942 "All through the night".
3. The image is not true "black and white", but de-colourised colour. This is a minor point and probably only matters if you see the movie in a cinema.
4. The DVD description of "1.85:1 widescreen" does not accord with modern terminology. The presentation is actually "letterbox" and what you see is a 1.85:1 image in a 4:3 frame.

I'm surprised there are only 55 reviews here. I wish more people knew about this film. It is put together so lovingly and hilariously by Steve Martin and Carl Reiner. You can tell they loved every minute of it. And it was so cleverly edited and shot. It's a stroke of genius that they had this wonderful idea of magically putting Steve into scenarios of classic films. Another studio or actor would have done a very poor job of it.
"Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" not only is a homage to (and spoof of) classic film noir, it is an uproariously funny vehicle that is infectiously silly from start to finish. I love when Martin dons women's clothes and a blonde wig, pretending to be Barbara Stanwyck while chatting with Fred Macmurray in the grocery store. That's just one wonderful scene in this fun flick.
This movie is a special treat for me because I love old classic movies and also Steve Martin films. It's the best of both worlds for me.

When I first saw this movie, I thought it was so clever and hilarious. It has many recognizable film noir moments in it. It's a classicly funny story and Steve Martin is great.

This is such a fun film as well as a work of art. I am old enough to remember the original films "cut" in and still able to totally enjoy this film. How Edith Head (her last movie) was able to replicate the clothing, accessories and total mood is truly Acadmy Award winning material and kudos to writing, directing and set design. Worthy of inclusion in any collectors library.
