4-1/2 stars rounding up. I really like this book: Pages 1-67 are really great as they do a pretty good job detailing Generation 1. Next is Generation 2, which gets only a few pages, and then it's on to a bunch of generations I knew next to nothing about.
But first, a few related items...
1. Transformers: The Ultimate Guide- paperback. Slightly newer, with 8 new pages- available now. And...
2. The Transformers - The Movie (20th Anniversary Special Edition). The *first* movie (animated), bridging G1 & G2.
Yes, the slightly newer paperback version has 8 new pages, but none of those cover the live action movie just released. It seems safe to say that if you already bought the hardcover, then the paperback is really unnecessary. They'll probably update both versions soon with pictures of the live action movie & toy tie-ins, right? So I know I'm sticking with the hardcover until the next edition is released. It's fascinating to see what a multimedia experience Transformers has become: we see pictures of toys, comics, cartoons, CGI, and the animated movie; everything is detailed except the live action film! Truly a fascinating look at the '80s phenomenon. I kinda wish they had mentioned at least a little about Jetfire & his Robotech connection, but Jetfire-Skyfire is only briefly mentioned in a few spots. I really like the pictures of toys, and would like to see more toys here in the future. I like it!

I started to get back into Transformers recently. Mostly to do with movie comming out July 4th. So I decided to check out this book to see how much my old Transformers were worth. I've also been checking out Ebay.
I just dug out my old box of Transformers and they were in pretty crapy shape. I wished I would taken care of them when I was younger. But 7 and 8 year olds destroy things.
I remember in 1984 getting my first Transformer. I was 7 and my brother was 9. My mom took us out to Woolworths in the mall. I got sunstreak and my brother got hound we were so happy. Through the next couple of years we ended up getting most of them.
They were so cool back then. I look at them now and most of them were pretty lame looking in robot mode. The worst looking are Ironhide, Rachet, and Megatron. The coolest looking were jazz, the decepticons jets, soundwave, shockwave, and Optimus Prime.
Transformers stopped being cool in 1986 after the movie came out. The futuristic one were dumb. They got even worse with the Beastmasters. I bought one of new ones and it took me 20 minutes to transform it.
If your a collector this is the one book to get.

This is definitely the best Transformers book out there...and I spent a long time looking. My five year old son loves it. We have looked at it every night for about a year now. It's also fun for Dad, since it reviews the whole history of Transformers and the toys back to my day.
Beware, the text in the book is quite advanced for a child under say 9. But the pictures all over each page are entertainment enough.
