The Government Manual for New Superheroes Books

In association with Amazon.com

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Novelty without the novelty
Written with the same idea as Max Brooks' "Zombie Survival Guide", this guide aims to give startup wannabe superheroes the basics. However, unlike Brooks' excellent ZSG, this book is written without the knowledge of comic book lore, without the zany and didactic wit, and most of all, without the substance. This book is merely a cash-in on the current superhero fad, and worst of all, the authors make almost no humorous allusions to heroes of the past.

Certainly there are overt references to Superman, Batman, and Spider-Man, none of which required more than watching the films of the same name. This reviewer understands the use of trademarked material, but knows also that the writers could have used thinly veiled references for any superhero fanatic (the people who would actually buy this book) to recognize and nod at. Instead it presents itself as a farce, which is fine, except for the fact that its title suggests a serious (and hopefully humourous deadpan) tone to it; in that regard it fails.

It is obvious to anyone who reads this book and knows their stuff that this book is a rarely amusing cash-in. At nearly eleven dollars for about 120 pages (with VERY large font and pictures), one cannot help but think that this book was pumped out in a weekend, with almost no research and even less wit.

Avoid this one.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Definitely a fun read.
A light-hearted fun read. I thought it was cool and easy to read through.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Disappointed
I was kinda disappointed with this manual. I had great expectations after reading the Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks, and was hoping for more of the same, but this book was a joke. There was very little substance to the book, and was very much designed only to be a gag. I received no helpful advice whatsoever on becoming a superhero.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Hi I'm Troy McClure...
This is a great satyrical look at how to become a superhero. It's very reminiscent of the 1950s style info-documentaries on "Duck & Cover" public service announcements and safety newsreels. You can almost hear The Simpsons character "Hi I'm Troy McClure, you might remember me from such infomentaries as...".

I feel this book is better put together than the "Superhero Handbook" by Michael Powell although that one is quite good also. For the large part, this book is focused on the gov't program of regular people donning the cape with gadgets ala Batman rather than mutants, aliens, or radioactively altered superbeings. I'd really recommend both books but text-wise, I like this one better. Unfortunately, it loses a star for lack of illustrations. What few there are, are done in the familiar 1950s line drawings. While Powell's is more modern, this sets a stage for 'historical' stylized superheroes.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Hilarious Homage to Comic Book Fantasy
These guys know their superhero lore, and their maniac humor and inventiveness make the "Manual" a really fun read for anyone who's at all familiar with the literature. Highly recommended!
