StarCraft #2: Shadow of the Xel'Naga Books

In association with Amazon.com

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Not entirely bad
I think the biggest problem with this novel is that there are too much detailed descriptions on the things that any devoted Starcraft player would know too well already. One thing is the author spent too many words describing how a Zerg colony was developed and how the units of three races operate. I don't think those detailed are necessary because we are able to learn them from the game's manual. If the author has cut down those details, then this story could be better and enjoyable. However, I think this book could be good for the people that have not yet have experienced the Starcraft universe or anyone that is just beginning in playing the game.

I was able to enjoy the story more after getting past all those descriptions. Also, I have not played Starcraft for a year or two, and it made me to want to play the game again. The battles in the book were exciting enough for me, and it's not all that unbearable, I believe.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - PLEASE, AVOID THIS BOOK
Look, If you value your money, you will avoid this book. I wanted to love this book! I really did! But as I kept reading it became more of a chore to read than anything else. I tried to give it the benefit of the doubt, but please, really if you dont want to waste seven bucks: AVOID THIS BOOK. I would much rather recommend the warcraft series rather than this one, or better yet, play the game!!

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Garbage
I loved the first book. This book was probably the worst Novel I have ever read, I love starcraft I am a Fu***** bookworm! the plot was retarted the characters sucked. when I was done I was like.... what? don't buy this horrible garbage.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Painfully written, horribly unrelated to SC, and plain boring.
I'm sorry to come down so hard on the authors, but I really want to spare people from wasting money on this book.

First up, this book is painfully written. Why?

Characters - 1 dimensional and boring, no development. Authors treat Duke like some dumb idiot hell bent on fighting rather than the sly leader we see from SC.

Battles - Even worse. Let me some up the battles - The protoss came, the zerg came, the fought the , the terrans came, they join the battle, etc. All 3 of the battles are 3-way zerg v terran v protoss battles, it really was painful to read.

Secondly, the story was horrible. Why?

Not Related to Starcraft or Broodwar. What you say? Yes, this is true. Sure, it has zerg, and terran, and protoss, and some xel'naga artifact, and duke rocks up, but the comparisons end there. Starcraft and later Broodwar were some of the most fantasic stories I've ever read/played through. The plots, twists, and characters like Raynor and Fenix that you just love. So why does the author choose to create some alien artifact on a backwater planet that the races compete for when there is all the great stories of what Raynor has been getting up to since Aiur (we see him only briefly in Broodwar) and what Duran has been doing too (forgive me if this was written before broodwar, but still there were equally good plots to explore. It just seems unimaginative.

No good SC characters. Sure Kerrigan makes a crappy cameo for a chapter or too, a and Duke plays a roll, but if you read the book without playing the game you wouldn't imagine him as the tough battle-hardened Duke we all love. Someone has told the author Duke has an alien-hating character trait and so now he charges in to kill toss or zerg WHENEVER HE SEES THEM all the while the author raving about how Alpha squadron are the best around (she makes him seem so incompetant it contradicts his character).

The author obviously has no passion for SC. You can tell the author is not engrossed in the univere and barely understands the concepts he is throwing around. Let me give you two examples.
Kerrigan says at the end when her brood is destroyed something like "No matter, I still have all my other broods (lists them), and soon I will launch my Brood War." To me, I thought the title "brood war" was about how the broods fought for control now the overmind was dead and was about Kerrigan winning control over the broods. Somehow calling killing the EUD, Terrans and Protoss a "Brood War" doesn't make sense to me.
Another quote (and I could be wrong on this) is that the book goes on and on (well, at least 2 or 3 times) about how Alpha Squadron is first in first out. It's been 5 years since I last played the original SC missions, but I swear it was "First in Last Out".

------------THIS PART IS THE BIGGEST INSULT TO SC OF ALL---------- SPOLIER (NOT LIKE YOU COULDN'T GUESS THIS WAS GOING TO HAPPEN FROM CHAPTER 1 ANYWAY-----------------------------

Why do authors feel the need to have crappy little towns/whatever triumphing against all odds? IT DOESN'T HAPPEN LIKE THAT. Basically, an isolated village of 40 miners fight of waves of zerg (hydras and zerglings) with mining equipment, 2 missiles from a missile turrent, and a well timed vespene stockpile exlposion. The main girl escapes from HYDRALISKS in some kind of farmer's tractor thingy, (they shoot spines but only some penetrate the armour and don't do enough damage to stop her) while later on the same hydralisks rip through BATTLECRUSIER armour and protoss zealots with ADVANCED SHIELDING. It frustrates me to no end that some crappy story about miners an farmers survivng against the zerg is one of the main parts of the story.

Overall, I found myself skipping entire pages it was written that badly. Its written like a boring narrative, "this happened, then this happened, , etc. I found it painful to read and uninspiring. I could of bore it if I found out what Raynor has been up to, or about the workings of Duran after he left the UED expedition, but its an unrealted story that doesn't add to the universe at all. Robert Jordan cost me $7 dollars more, is 3 times as long, and in all honesty the first page was more inspiring and captivating than this whole book. Its annoying because I've played SC custom campaigns with 10x better stories than this.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - not too bad
the characters are really boring and the style is pretty bad. But after the part where u would rather die then read on, it does actually get better. i read the other reviews about this book and so far most of them are right, the first book was way better. i mean there's little or no humor in the entire book, well maybe except the end and there's not much that's really interesting. well on the other hand it's pretty faithful with the actual game in general giving u specifics about units and stuff. the thing i disliked most about the book is the main character, she's not very believable. It's like the author didn't have enough space to gradually adapt her to new situations so didn't bother to.

I wouldn't recommend this book for a casual read unless u've never played the game b4 or havent played it in a while.
