Wes Anderson's Rushmore is an incredible film. Not a movie, but rather a film in the sense of art. That is not often achieved enough in the film industry. The underlying fact that makes the film so incredible is the writing involved. Yes, Wes Anderson is an amazing director (and one of my idols). Yes, Jason Schwartzman is impeccable in his role as Max Fisher. Yes, Bill Murray was screwed over by the Academy. But most importantly, Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson were looked over in the best original screenplay category. As a young aspiring screenwriter myself, I can look up to those two men for their incredible work on this film's screenplay.
The first, and most important step in the filmmaking process, is the creation and writing of a great story. That was taken care of with flair not seen often enough. I urge you to purchase this today, so you can be one of the first people to own this film's inception: the screenplay.
Also, if Rushmore moved you, then you should purchase the soundtrack for it because the wonderful music selected by Wes Anderson for the film is very important in a film. Wes Anderson did it right.

Bill Murray was the best/favorie part to read for,even I never auditioned. I would like to be in Rusmore, so if Bill Murray reads this, please have me be in Rushmore too.

Haven't read the book, but if anything like the movie - GODHEAD - can be the only explaination. Yes, this a review before its publication. Don't worry, I hear "reviewers" do stuff like this all the time.
P.S. Buy this book and follow along with the movie. Unfortunaltely, there are no bells to during the movie to signify the page turning.

Much has been made of the performances in Rushmore -- all of which are remarkable. Bill Murray is hilarious and startlingly moving, Olivia Williams is delightful, and Jason Schwartzman -- well, he just plain is Max Fisher. His performance is astonishing, especially considering it's a rookie effort.
But what of the roles as written? What of the story? It's fresh, unpredictable, and moving. Part of this is the truly odd plot and comic tone, but there's something else -- an underlying compassion that permeates the film and sets it apart from so many other hilarious but somehow cold-hearted comedies today.
Wes Anderson & Owen Wilson truly do seem to love the characters and the world they've created. And, so, in the end, do we.
But what of the screenplay? Rushmore is written with a breathtakingly sure hand from start to finish. There's tremendous economy here. Every scene is essential to the story, and every scene is maximized for full dramatic/comic value. At the same time, the screenplay has a delicacy and an attention to detail (one example: Max brings sandwiches when he tells Blume's wife of her husband's affair).
In short, Rushmore is one of the most original, funny, and moving films I've seen in a very long time.
