The affable host entertained millions of viewers each night with his celebrity interviews and his comic monologues, often inspired by events of the day. JOHNNY CARSON (1925-2005), a radio host from the late 1940s, entered TV as a writer for Red Skelton (1951), making a promising comic debut when Skelton was injured backstage. After hosting the game show Who Do You Trust (1957-1962), became host of NBC's Tonight Show, pioneered by Steve Allen (1954-1957) and Jack Parr (1957-1962). Carson became a major national celebrity, winning 6 Emmys and many other awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1992) and the Kennedy Center Lifetime Achievement Award (1993). His farewell program, which revisited great moments from the show, was a national event.
