Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Has its moments
My friends, we all know that these OUR GANG comedies (made after the great Hal Roach heyday of 1922-1938) are not up to the original series. Much of it in fact (such as 123 GO, Don't Lie, Doin' Our Bit, and Benjamin Franklin Jr) predated the PC killjoy message oriented kid's "entertainment" of recent times.

With that said, some of these are in fact quite amusing and have their moments. "Aladdin's Lantern" is a funny backstage tale. "Unexpected Riches" has a pretty fascinating (if un ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Let go of the Hal Roach version and sit back and laugh
Although there are many who would disagree with me, I couldn't stop watching The Our Gang Collection without an occasional chuckle while taking my stroll down memory road. They may not be laugh-out-loud funny like the Hal Roach shorts, but it is still a relevant collection that won't disappoint a true fan. Yes, I know all about the parental warning on the box and the vicious controversy surrounding this release, but the fact remains that the antics portrayed by Spanky, Alphafa, Darla and Buckwheat ... Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - SUCH LITTLE RASCALS! SUCH SILLINESS! SUCH RACISM! SUCH A DATED GANG.
Long before the Rat Pack and the Brat Pack and the Baby Boomers and the Gen Xers, there was Our Gang. The spunky team of wee ones included Spanky, Alfalfa, Buckwheat, Froggy, Butch, Darla and a host of other human and canine (think Pete the Dog and Violet the Goat)oddities.
There's even little Mickey Guibitosi, who would later change his name to Robert Blake, and later, to inmate No. 7253166.
Originally developed by producer Hal Roach as a series of silent shorts, Our Gang remained ... Read More

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - The Decline of Our Gang
Do not confuse the 52 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer shorts with the classic comedies produced by Hal Roach Studios. When Roach sold Our Gang to MGM in 1938, the creative spark quickly diminished until the series became unwatchable. Apart from the initial 1938-39 shorts (highlighted by "The Little Ranger," "Aladdin's Lantern," "Men in Fright" and "Alfalfa's Aunt"), these one-reel travesties lack the charm and spontaneity of the Roach efforts. Spanky, Buckwheat and the gang were badly served by MGM's joyless, heavy ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Finally
Most will not agree, but I almost like this series better than the Roach series. Probably because I grew up on most of these as they seemed to be repeated more in syndication. Of course I do enjoy the Roach series too. I guess, if you start and stop where Spanky is, that is what encompasses my likings, so it crosses both series. I give this five stars because the shorts actually look great even though there is no mention of restoration. Also because this set is the only way to get these uncut. If you have ... Read More
