Editorial Review:

Amazon.com:
Bela Lugosi followed up his star-making role in Dracula with this ambitious low-budget horror film from the Halperin brothers, who effectively transplanted the misty gothic mood of the Universal horror films to their poverty-row studio. White Zombie drips with atmosphere from the opening, as eerie chanting accompanies the credits and Madeleine (Madge Bellamy) arrives at midnight to witness a mysterious burial before coming face to face with the satanic looking Murder Legendre (Lugosi with goatee and searing eyes), a hypnotist and voodoo master who has been supplying the local mills with an army of zombie laborers. Madeleine's nightmare is just beginning. Having landed in a world of almost perpetual night, where hollow-eyed zombies lumber through the sugar mill and the ghostly town is eerily bereft of living souls, she becomes the object of desire for Legendre, whose plan to possess her involves her initiation to the world of the undead. This first zombie movie is also one of the best, with Lugosi's archly sinister performance dominating the film (thankfully obscuring a lot of overacting by supporting players), and astounding sets and gorgeous matte paintings creating a wondrous sense of poetic doom. --Sean Axmaker

Product Description:
White Zombie (Enhanced) 1932 starring Bela Lugosi

When Charles Beaumont convinces his friends Madeline Short and Neil Parker to get married on his Haitian plantation, it is not just a friendly gesture. He is in love with Madeline and wants her to be his bride instead. To aid with his plan he asks Murder Legendre for help. When Murder gives Charles a potion that will help turn Madeline into a zombie, Charles doesn t realize that he and Murder aren t playing on the same team or that the grieving Neil won t let Madeline s death go unforgotten.

Independently produced, White Zombie was the first zombie horror film. Bela Lugosi stars as the local sugar mill owner, Murder Legendre, who employs zombies in his mill. Also starring are Madge Bellamy as Madeline, John Harron as Neil and Robert Frazer as Charles Beaumont. White Zombie also has the distinction of being the influence for the name of the popular band, White Zombie.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Buy a different version
I'm not sure why this version of White Zombie is labelled "enhanced" -- I bought it expecting a better copy than the three versions of White Zombie that I already own, and instead got a worse copy, dark and grainy and overexposed. It's not horrible, but there are definitely better prints of this film that you can buy at the same price or cheaper. (Note that the other reviews on this page, which rave about the quality of the DVD and the extras, do NOT refer to this copy, but to "Horror Classics ... Read More

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Dated ? Yes. Creepy ? Yes. Worth owning ? Yes
This is an important movie that any classic horror fan should have. It is the first (if not, one of ) Zombie movie. Bela Lugosi as a voodoo doctor with Zombie slaves. Some good early drama, romance and horror. Yes it is dated, but if like a good atmospheric horror film that moves on a purposely slow pace and has a great chilling performance by Lugosi (his evil eyes are really creepy) then you will enjoy this.
For those of you who haven't seen this and are curios about this movie and other ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - EXCEPTIONAL!!!!!
This is a great disc from Roan. White Zombie has never looked better. The special features are also excellent. No criticisms.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - As good a horror film as ever came out of Universal...
...except it's not a Universal horror film. It was an independently made film directed by Victor Halperin, but it has the look and feel of Universal horror of the 30's. This is the eerie tale of a newlywed couple who has come to live in Haiti, the alleged walking dead forced to work the fields at night, a local rich man who becomes enamored of the bride-to-be and wants her for himself, whatever the means, and finally Lugosi, the local master of voodoo that the rich man comes to in order to get his ... Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - The Horror of the Living Dead
The drumbeat and song tell of a foreign location. The people bury a dead body in the road to prevent it from being dug up and turned into a zombie. Who are those strange people in the night? Are they are the living dead, zombies who work at night? Mr. Beaumont offered them a job. Is there something strange going on? There are ominous noises in the sugar works. "I looked into her eyes." "No, not that!" "There is no other way." What about that lone flower? What will that marriage bring? What about that ... Read More
