Amazon.com essential video:
Clint Eastwood fired the original director, Philip Kaufman (The Right Stuff), and took over the reins of this project himself. He may have had a point: this brutal, thoughtful western, a near-tragedy about a Civil War veteran whose past comes looking for him, is probably Eastwood's most mature frontier drama prior to the Oscar winning Unforgiven. Hoping to build a quiet life in a cooperative community of settlers, Eastwood's Wales blames himself when his enemies attack the homestead, and he has to revert to his warrior instincts to help fend off the threat. The jittery intensity of Sondra Locke (who would be Mrs. Eastwood, at least for a while), and the screen-filling charisma of the late Chief Dan George harmonize beautifully with Eastwood, who had finally figured out how to add depth and texture to his stock-in-trade Man of Steel persona. This one may be too short on action to satisfy fans of Eastwood's Dirty Harry films, or of the Italian westerns he made with Sergio Leone, but it's an honorable effort. --David Chute

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Best western ever!
The Outlaw Josey Wales is the best western movie I have ever seen. And that includes the great standards like Shane and others. Clint Eastwood gives an unforgetable and powerful performance as a Confederate fighter whose family is killed by renegade Union soldiers and his fight to get revenge. I highly recommend this movie...if you like stories of the old west, you will love this movie.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Intriguing revisionist western
The Bottom Line:

I've seen a lot of westerns (and at least 5 Eastwood ones alone) but I don't think I've ever seen one quite like The Outlaw Josey Wales, which sometimes meanders during the course of its 135 minute running length but tells an interesting story and is directed with flair; I wouldn't recommend it if you haven't seen many westerns, despite how good I think it is, but if you want a different take on the genre check out Josey Wales.

3.5/4

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Oh My God!! It's Josey Wales!!
Clint Eastwood has always maintained that Joesy Wales was his favorite film. It's probably the greatest "Western" of all time. A simple man, who had all he ever cared for "butchered and raped" who goes on a ruthless quest of revenge.

I know people who hate Westerns, Copyboy's, The South, you name it... Who love to watch this movie whenever I put it on. They converted Pale Rider to Blu Ray, and not Josey Wales!! My God! Hurry up!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Outlaw Jose Whales
One of Clint Eastwoods better westerns, yes he seems to play the bad guy but he has a reason and he's a man with a mission to avenge his families murder during the civil war.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Eastwood's first masterpiece as director and the finest western of the 1970s
When I first saw "The Outlaw Josey Wales", probably the first couple of times, I saw it the way I'd expect that a lot of young people in the 1980s, the first "video" generation, saw it - a great funny action movie that could provide a larger number of potential drinking games than just about any film you could think of: take a drink whenever Josie (Clint Eastwood) spits tobacco; take a drink whenever Josey kills someone; take a drink whenever anybody utters the words "Josey Wales", whenever Josey ...
