This device (and the communicator and phaser) from the original Star Trek series is a faithful reproduction of Spock's Tricorder (does anyone know that the three things are that a TRI-corder records?). It is a toy but it is good enough quality to be a collectible. Lots of bells and whistles, and includes a popout compartment for the little hand held scanner. Back in the 1990s, certain attempts were made at making toys from Star Trek TOS. They were ok. I got them, but they always seemed to lack a bit in the credible department. I ordered this and at first I thought it was broken because all it would do was play one of the stock phrases "Most strange. Readings indicate a life form--possibly human." when any of the three buttons was pressed and flipping the top panel open/closed had no effect.
However, after reading another post on amazon, I looked at the battery compartment, and there is a switch with three settings--"Try me", "Off", and "Play". It was set to "Try me" (the in store demo setting). When I switched it ... Read More
