Product Description: Comedy master Blake Edwards weaves his wacky madness in this first-rate WWII story of a by-the-book Captain (Dick Shawn) who is ordered to take over a troop of misfit soldiers led by Lieutenant James Coburn.System Requirements:Running Time: 116 minutesFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: COMEDY/CLASSICS Rating: NR UPC: 883904106845 Manufacturer No: M110684
Amazon.com: In 1943, a by-the-book captain (Dick Shawn) is put in charge of a decimated company with orders to capture a quaint Italian village. Upon arriving, the men find the opposing soldiers all too eager to surrender, but only after the local wine festival, a bacchanal that leaves both sides wasted. The troops are forced to work together to stage a mock battle to satisfy American and German forces that are close by. Neither cynical like The Americanization of Emily nor absurd like King of Hearts, this 1966 comedy directed by Blake Edwards (The Pink Panther) and scripted by William Peter Blatty (The Exorcist) is a carefree romp. Collateral pleasures include Edwards’ signature stylish slapstick, Carroll O’Connor as a blustery general, James Coburn as the cool-under-fire Lieutenant Christian, Harry Morgan as an intelligence officer who gets lost in the village catacombs and goes mad, and the ravishingly beautiful Giovanna Ralli as the village Mayor’s very pliant daughter. "War is hell," the DVD box proclaims, "and isn’t it fun?" Not really, but that shouldn't mar your enjoyment of one of Edwards' lesser-known films that is ripe for rediscovery. --Donald Liebenson

This 1966 comedy looks fantastic on this May 2008 DVD release of this classic comedy. The format is anamorphic widescreen, enhanced for 16x9 aspect ratio, large-screen TVs. The picture and sound are crystal clear--beautiful rich, natural colors, sharp and crisp picture quality--it probably did not look this good in the movie theaters. If you have a large-screen, high-definition TV/high-defintion DVD player with surround sound--you will not be disappointed. Highly recommended!

This movie is a funny WW II spoof and unmistakably Blake Edwards. It has a female impersonator, water gags and all the elements usually found in his movies. Henry Mancini provides great music. Henry Morgan should have had a better character roll. I would rather not have military overtones in movies.

The gentle, absurdist comedy in this Blake Edwards film portraying American soldiers in Sicily during WWII prefigures in some ways his later "Pink Panther" series. One would have to be humorless to object to his stereotypes of the sultry local seductress, Italian troops more interested in village festivals, music, wine and women than fighting, and the evil Nazis who contrast to the bumbling but eventually victorious Americans. James Coburn plays the resourceful American sergeant and Harry Morgan, ... Read More

This movie has always been one of my favorites. With Dick Shawn as Capt. Lionel Cash, being the sharp no-nonsense officer who gets ambushed by James Coburn (as Lt. Christian), Aldo Ray and assorted others who lead him to find his more fun-loving side, if somewhat begrudgingly. This film takes a battle for a small italian town and turns it into a party. Then it reverses the process, all with plenty of Laughs. Harry Morgan of M*A*S*H fame is excellent as an officer who ends up beneath the town wandering ... Read More

This is a great, but under-appreciated movie. Like most Blake Edwards movies, it has fine writing and a good balance between subtle and obvious humor. There is a fine soundtrack by Henry Mancini, and it is unusual in that it features Dick Nash on euphonium (he normally plays trombone for Mancini) in some nice "character" performances. It co-stars Harry Morgan, who plays Col. Potter in MASH. Morgan also played a dingy officer in an earlier MASH episode. This movie has him in a similar role, going a bit bananas ... Read More
