True fusion of different styles, and a seamless one at that: symphonic, chamber, progressive rock, fusion, symphonic electronica in the tradition of Vangelis and Jarre, except this album pre-dates these artists' best-known works by at least one year. Great atmospheres, warmth, emphasis on composition and performance rather than effects, set apart this album from other electronic releases of the 70's and 80's, which tend to sound metallic, cold and repetitious. It feels organic and natural rather ... Read More

The only Jan Hammer I was familier with was his work on the Miami Vice TV production: Tight, high-stress, over-the-top percussions.
This Album spends most of its time exploring moods and atmospheres. The titles indicate the 'action' revolves around the biblical creation story in Genesis I (there are no lyrics). Nothing could involve more action than creation, but this work is more the description of the thinking process that went into the first week.

Keyboardist Jan Hammer recorded an album in 1975 called The First Seven Days (Columbia/Legacy). Like Duke Ellington's sacred concerts and John Coltrane's A Love Supreme, it was musician as preacher or philosopher. Hammer, most famous for his soundtrack to the television show Miami Vice, doesn't exactly write spiritual ... Read More

In the 70s and 80s you could actually turn on the radio in the right markets and hear some great Jazz/Fusion. I miss those days.
At the forefront of this scene you found The Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever and Brand X.
I loved these groups but especially The Mahavishnu (and Brand X later.) What a lineup! John McGlaughlin, Jan Hammer, Jerry Goodman, Billy Cobham and Rick Laird - but they didn't last too long. TOO many great musicians I'm afraid.
Shortly after their demise Hammer ... Read More

As a huge Mahavishnu Orchestra fan, I was pretty excited when I stumbled across this 1975 album, which has been nicely remastered by Columbia. This album features Jan playing all of the instruments including acoustic piano, Fender Rhodes electric piano, moog synthesizer, Oberheim synthesizer and digital sequencer, Freeman string synthesizer, and mellotron along with a full drum kit. As it turns out, he is a pretty good drummer. Steve Kindler provides some violin work here and there, while David Earle ... Read More
