A novel blend of doomsday thriller and meditative science fiction, Danny Boyle's Sunshine imagines a disturbing future in which mankind must re-ignite the sun or face total extinction. A team of scientists and crew members (played by an eclectic cast that includes Cillian Murphy from Boyle's 28 Days Later, The Fantastic Four's Chris Evans, Rose Byrne of TV's Damages, and martial-arts legend Michelle Yeoh) is dispatched to the dying star, but disaster strikes from almost every conceivable angle; as the crew is whittled down by accidents and psychological breaks, the survivors must discover a way to carry out the mission or seal the fate of the world's population. Alternately exciting and pensive, Sunshine's dichotomous tone may throw viewers expecting a special-effects bonanza (though the film's visuals are frequently stunning), but for those who recall such cerebral '70s efforts as Silent Running and Phase IV, Boyle's unusual take will be refreshing and even fascinating. The DVD includes commentaries by Boyle and Dr. Brian Cox, who served as the film's science advisor; Boyle also lends his voice to a brace of deleted scenes, including an alternate ending (which doesn't improve on the one used in the film). Danny Boyle has got to be stopped from making any more movies. This was a good movie made bad by a director trying to...God knows what he was trying to do with the ridiculous vibrating camera angles and the extreme closeups every five seconds. You will walk away from this feeling cheated. The acting was good and the story was acceptable. There is a good movie some where in there if you could just edit out all the ridiculous film school "Oh I'm innovative!" crap that Danny Boyle saw fit to jam into ... Read More

I am a sci-fi fan myself - I read sci-fi books, subscribe on and off to a sci-fi magazine and watch sci-fi movies. I would happily tolerate something that's less than a masterpiece if I could find just a little bit of that something that makes sci-fi such a great form of expression: imagination, out-of-the-box thinking, daring to provoke, wonder at the infinity that's surrounding us, the passion to explore. I can't say that I found much of that in 'Sunshine'.

I was enjoying this film up until the last 20 minutes or so. We have an enjoyable , intelligent science fiction space drama with some real moments of suspense as the gallant crew attempts to complete their mission of "re-igniting" the dying Sun, when ... WHAM!...out of left field comes this inane, confusing slasher flic finale. What a bummer! All though I rarely comment on a film I feel that this one requires it. As a viewer of many Sci Fi films and that includes the first showing of " the earth stood still". I believe that as an amature (can't spell) movie goer This film provides what intelligent movies demand. It is not a quick CGI ridden film but one that demands the attention of the viewer. I think one of my friend's reaction best sums up the mainstream perspective: bubble-gum in mouth, she yawned several times throughout the movie, and ended with "that was kinda boring sorry" . Well, it was expected. This is no Star Wars, Alien, or Armageddon. Those were geared toward entertainment; this movie is brain food imo.
