I bought this product as a birthday gift for a 55 year old Trekkie collector. He loved it. In fact he went to a Trekkie convention and used it the entire time he was there. The communicator seemed be a big hit and a great addition to his collection.

These series of toys are great fun for those of us who fondly remember the days when the original series was new and seeing these amazing things actually function is amazing!

This replica looks nice and very original. However, the build quality is quite cheap and definitely well below what one would expect for a $30 to $35 product. For this price one would think that it would be made out of metal. Instead it is made out of plastic. The hinges for the lid do not look or feel that sturdy so one has to be careful not to break the lid of every time it is opened. In addition, the plastic composition gives it a very cheap feel. When I was a kid the "Communicator" replicas were made solid metal and also funtioned as a two way radio that had a 1/4 mile range. This was way cool for kids to have fun play with. (A communicator that actually works! Imagine that) With todays technology, I'm sure that for a few bucks more they could make a great communicator replica that has a 5 mile range or even a real cell phone for that matter.
