When I was a kid the "Communicator" replicas were made solid metal and also funtioned as a two way radio that had a 1/4 mile range. This was way cool for kids to have fun play with. (A communicator that actually works! Imagine that) With todays technology, I'm sure that for a few bucks more they could make a great communicator replica that has a 5 mile range or even a real cell phone for that matter. (I would buy that!)Hey, how about a tricorder replica that is actualy a marine hand held GPS. (I'd ... Read More

Trekkies looking for a nice replica of the original series' Communicator need look no further. I don't recall ever getting a good look at one of these on the 1960s TV series, but the replica for sale here certainly looks like the close-up photos of Communicators I've seen. Flip it open, and you'll hear the same sound effect used on the original Trek series. ... the motor that spins the moire pattern makes truly annoying (and inappropriate) sound. This device is a near-perfect aesthetic reproduction, but the noise of the motor really does detract from an otherwise winning product. One other gripe that is that the two buttons wobble; they don't feel precision.
With the batteries loaded (it comes ... Read More

Judging from all the other great reviews, I just got a dud. Everything basically works right except sometimes when you close it; it stays on. Sometimes I close, it turns off, I set it down, then 5 mins. later it turns back on lol. I can spend 5 mins. just trying to get it to shut up. But when it's working correctly it's very well done.
Anyway, great product if you don't happen to get a lemon....and even then, it's not THAT bad.

I like the antenna on this model, but I have been only able to get the "Try Me" features to work - with the voice on the right button saying "Enterprise, this is Kirk." Even after gently opening up both levels of the cases and tracing through the wiring, I just gave up and put it back together. It will now sit on the shelf, because I don't feel like going through the hassle of returning it.
