Amazon.com Product Description: See clearly at night and alert drivers and other cyclists to your presence with this Alias HID light set from Planet Bike. Designed to fit 25.5 mm to 31.8 mm handlebars, the light includes a 10-watt, high-intensity discharge (HID) bulb that employs Solarc technology to light an efficient path. Solarc bulbs offer several characteristics that distinguish them from other metal halide lamps, including small size, low wattage, a short arc gap, and a high color temperature. From a user perspective, the bulbs produce sunlight-caliber illumination that maintains outstanding brightness through its lifetime while requiring just one third the amount of energy required to power comparable halogen lamps. Cyclists will also dig the light's integrated battery and light head, which eliminate wires for a cleaner look and a quick attachment. Other details include a 14.4-volt lithium-ion battery that charges in just under three hours, a custom soft case for convenient transport and storage, and a 2.5-hour runtime on the high setting and a 3.25-hour runtime on the low settings. The Alias HID light, which weighs only 0.84 pounds, carries a limited lifetime warranty.
About Planet Bike In November of 1996, Planet Bike was founded in Madison, Wisconsin. In many ways, Planet Bike began as a social experiment that dedicated itself to doing business in a different way. Instead of being just another company that develops and sells products with profit as its end goal, Planet Bike wanted to help bring about positive change for people, their communities, and the environment.
Despite being a simple machine, the people at Planet Bike have always believed that the bicycle has great potential to help improve the world and the lives of the people in it. From the start, they have embraced an alternative corporate purpose which seeks to help get more people on bicycles by making communities friendlier places for the self-propelled. By donating 25% of company profits to causes that promote and facilitate bicycle usage, Planet Bike hopes to make an impact.
Social experiments aside, Planet Bike was born from the heart of a cyclist with a goal of making innovative, high quality, and practical bicycle accessories. Simply put, they strive to design and develop the best bicycle products in the world. In the company's short ten year history, they have made important product innovations within the bicycle industry. Advancements include the 4-line computer which is now a standard in the industry and the world's first self-contained HID light. Not bad for a company that ten years ago started as a one man operation. Today, while still a small company, Planet Bike continues to evolve and improve their product line with the goal of always striving to build accessories that make it easier for people to ride their bikes. Since 1996, Planet Bike's financial support of the grassroots bicycle movement has totaled $500,000. By 2010, they have made a goal to donate $1 million to organizations that are dedicated to making America a friendlier place for cyclists.

Really a nice light - casts a great beam of light! I've been commuting to & from work (9+ miles) with this light in the dark & wet Oregon weather lately, and it works great.
Pros? Brightness!!!
Cons? Battery life - may need a second charger, so I can have one both at work & at home, so I can recharge at work. Also, have to take the battery out of the light to recharge - sure wish I could just plug the charger into the light!

I've had the Alias HID for about 9 months now, and I have to agree with much of B. Main's review: the light itself is certainly bright enough, but it just isn't a practical product for the price. The two main problems I have with the light are battery life and the mounting hardware. Battery life will, of course, deteriorate over time, and I've gotten 9 pretty solid months of use from mine. But now I rarely get more than an hour of use (bright setting) between charges. Since my commute is about 1:15, ... Read More

I love this light. It throws off mass quantities of lumens!! :) And the duration was great... It would throw off light for 2 hours or more.
However, the battery has really poor charge/discharge cycle limits... After 6 months or so the battery life really degraded to the point that I can only get 20 minutes of light out of it. And in fairness to the manufacturer, they state in their literature that the battery is only good for 180 charge/discharge cycles. That's 6 months of commuting. ... Read More

I have owned this light for over 6 months now and use it frequently on my daily 12 mile commute.
I ride along a dark path with very few street lights and with my old light (LED) I could not see bumps, twigs, dogs, other bikers or runners very well or sometimes not at all. The HID lets me see everything I need to and also alerts people I overtake to my presence, because they notice the shadow they cast in this light's cone. What's even better, I get a lot more respect from car drivers in ... Read More

I purchased a Planet Bike Alias HID in August, 2007. I was looking for a powerful "to see" light that I could easily remove from my bike. What sold me on this light was 1. the intelligent battery charger which doesn't require monitoring, 2. the brightness of the lamp/bulb, and 3. the sturdy form-follows-function simplicity of the system. After using this light as my year-round daily commute light for over a year and a half my main problems with it are 1. the fragility of the plastic bracket (I've cracked ... Read More
