Editorial Review:

Product Description:
OUTER LIMITS is one of the major acts of the so-called Eighties' Japanese School of Progressive rock. Famous for its exceptional melodic refinement, the band was also keen on a romantism that can be linked with the Italian School (QUELLA VECCHIA LOCANDA, PREMIATA FORNERIA MARCONI, LOCANDA DELLE FATE...). The group displayed a brand of sophisticated art-rock, with delicate and precious sounds, enlightened by lyrical violin parts, Mellotron layers and fine guitar arpeggios. Considered as the best and most inspired Japanese band, OUTER LIMITS could have been of of the masters of Progressive rock, somewhere between KING CRIMSON and UK, if only it has been British. Tomoki UENO shines in the role of the opera singer, in the unmistakable style he has made his own. The first album "Misty Moon" (1985) is regarded as one of the classics of the genre: one can find a great collection of epic tracks, dominated by emphatic keyboards parts, a lyrical violin and a crimsonian guitar. "A Boy Playing The Magical Buggle Horn" has been recorded one year prior to "The Scene Of Pale Blue" (1987). "The Silver Apples On The Moon" has been captured live (Without an audience) for a radio broadcast in 1989, showcasing the musicians' best tracks. And if we eventually had to wait eight years more to see things happening (Twenty years after the last real studio album !), this was just to prove that OUTER LIMITS is definitely time-proof. Still published on the Musea label, this new rendition is called "Stromatolite" (2007). Tomoki UENO is not here anymore, but the rest of the crew is, keyboards player Shusei TSUKAMOTO and violinist Takashi KAWAGUSHI at the front. Add to this that this reunion is more than the usual brand of nostalgia: the compositions, still mainly written by the keyboards player, are simply amongst the bes

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Strong Symphonic Progressive
I have not heard the early albums from Outerlimits, perhaps they are very different from this new release which appeared after a 17 year hiatus. In any case, it doesn't matter what they were then, "Stromatolite", released in 2007, is a very good symphonic progressive release from this group from Japan.

The album opens with the instrumental "Cosmic Velocity" which starts with waves hitting the beach and quickly grows into a high energy piece which really engages the listener and makes ... Read More
