Editorial Review:
Product Description: This 1970s cop show developed quite a following as it documented the adventures of three rookie police officers. Set in California the show followed Willie a young guy barely done with college; Mike a former marine; and Terry who was recruited to the profession as part of a minority program. Together they deal with the struggles of police work as their families try to deal with the fear of losing them to the job. This set contains all 23 episodes from the show's first season.System Requirements:Running Time; 1174 Mins.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: TELEVISION/SERIES & SEQUELS Rating: NR UPC: 043396195158 Manufacturer No: 19515
Amazon.com: Aaron Spelling's series The Rookies was a mildly successful attempt to put a younger face on the aging cop-drama genre via a trio of new police recruits, who attempted to protect and serve Southern California with their hearts and minds as well as their guns. The trio in question--former project resident Georg Stanford Brown, who sought to solve his people's problems from behind a badge, solid ex-vet Sam Melville, and good-natured Michael Ontkean--saw their share of action during the show's four-year run from 1972 to 1976, but frequently solved conflicts through dialogue, not brawn. Gerald S. O'Laughlin was their seen-it-all lieutenant, while a pre-Charlie's Angels Kate Jackson was Melville's wife, who did her part as a nurse. The Rookies' blend of social conscience and street action worked for the most part, especially in episodes like "The Commitment" (disc 1), in which Brown and Melville hunt down the assailant who shot Ontkean (their search takes them onto the back lot of the Fox Studios, which provides an interesting glimpse at their movie production slate), and "Crossfire," in which a black cop dealing with anger issues is sent to a camp that bolsters community relationships between the police and the public. The dialogue borders on the heavy-handed at times, but for the most part, The Rookies is an engaging alternative to the by-the-books cop shows of the '50s and '60s. The five-disc set includes no extras, which is unfortunate, given that the original two-hour movie that served as the show's pilot (which featured Darren McGavin in O'Loughlin's role) would've made an interesting companion piece to the episodes. --Paul Gaita

Ok.I know a LOT about this series. So I DO consider myself a kind of expert. First, this DVd set is a re-mastered digitally enhanced edition of uncut (MINUS previews to next week that originally aired!!) 49 minute episodes. That is the good news. The bad news. Where is the original PILOT movie called tHE ROOKIES that ran 75 minutes (no commercials) and featured the same cast (minus Kate Jackson and Gerald S O Laughlin) and featured Darren Mcgavin? It introduced the series and truly was a "pilot". ... Read More

I remember this show in the 70's, but only vaugly, however one episode stuck in my mind called "A taste of terror". and I remember seeing it when I was seven. and it was pretty scary for me at that time. However over the years I forgot about the show , until I was checking on Amazon on the release date for "Emergency- season four",and found this as well.
Oddly enough I started to remember the episode, and read the reviews, and took a chance and purchased it. The first episode was kinda lame ... Read More

All episodes are great quality ,but where is the 2 hour pilot? And do we have to wait another 3 years for season 2 (t j hooker , charlies angels, family, s.w.a.t)? why would they leave it out . highly priced set with no interviews and no pilot . oh well ,, people if we dont speek up expect sony to not improve their season sets.
