Editorial Review:
Amazon.com: Fans of legendary jazz pianist Chick Corea and bebop/bluegrass banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck are well aware of the pair's previous collaborations (Corea guests on two Flecktones albums, and Fleck appears on Corea's Rendezvous in New York DVD), but their first full-length release should surprise even their most jaded followers. The two went into the project with intense seriousness of purpose, Corea writing four pieces and Fleck six. (The standard "Brazil" is their only cover.) They push each other hard in adapting their instruments to genres (bluegrass, country, Latin, ragtime, classical, blues, and world) normally outside their idioms, Corea playing 'grassy banjo patterns on the piano on Fleck's mournful "Mountain" and Fleck stretching on Corea's suite-like "Joban Dna Nopia." With few exceptions, the compositions are only frameworks for vast improvisation, which might be expected. But instead of setting each other up for extended solos, Corea and Fleck join together with breathtaking precision and verve, weaving and intertwining through remarkable contrapuntal excursions, only to break and meet up again in perfect sync. Despite the thrill of Fleck's chromatic chases and classical flirtations and Corea's mastery of difficult lines on Fleck's rippling "Spectacle," one can't help but think they would have benefited from a tad more instrumentation--especially bass and percussion. Perhaps that's the next step this wickedly inventive duo wll take in their ongoing odyssey of genius. --Alanna Nash

I do not just say this due to the expected technical mastery and good composition, but because this is a very tasteful and listenable album. I am at a point in my listening and work as a hobbyist composer/songwriter where it is important to me to create works that one can listen to in various situations.
I just had a somewhat stressful day and after coming home looking through my CD's I decided to put this one on. It has the desired effect of personal focus and it is just really good ... Read More

BEING A LONG-TIME FAN OF CHICK COREA AND BELA AND HAVING SEEN THEM LIVE SEVERAL TIMES, I WAS VERY MUCH ANTICIPATING THIS ALBUM. BUT FOR ME, THE TWO JUST DIDN,T MESH. I REALIZE HOW SUBJECTIVE MUSIC IS AND THAT OTHERS MAY JUST LOVE THIS COLABORATION BUT FOR ME, IT WAS A DISAPPOINTMENT. I WAS NOT EVEN VERY INTERESTED IN MOST OF THE COMPOSITIONS. BUT ALTHOUGH I FEEL THAT THIS ALBUM WAS A FAILURE, I AM HAPPY THAT THESE TWO MADE THE ATTEMPT. THESE THINGS ARE RISKY AND SOMETIMES ....

Who would have thought that piano and banjo could co-exist, let alone enchant and surprise? When you pair up two masters of each instrument (and master composers/arrangers as well) you get magic. I was truly enchanted by the melody and whimsy of this collaboration. Chick and Bela interact and co-create with such playfulness that one cannot help but be infected and moved by their insouciance. I highly recommend you add this album to your collection and play it often... new worlds await!

As a Chick Corea fan since 1971, I have collected most of his released albums and CD's and videos and DVD's. I was scared of this one, though. First, BANJO and piano, I had bad thoughts about that. Second, the cover art looked too much like the recent Scientology-themed albums that I didn't really want to acquire. Anyway, this is a very nice album, the banjo playing sounds more like a guitar or sometimes a harp, really more like a guitar. The music is the main thing. It's pure (maybe not as pure ... Read More

This album displays exactly what you would expect from two people with such virtuosity as Bela Fleck and Chick Corea. Buy this album if you have even a hint of coolness in you. If you don't, this album will make you cooler just by listening to it. You will not be dissapointed.
