Editorial Review:

Product Description:
Director Ron Howard teams with Steve Martin and an all-star cast to create a hilarious touching and unforgettable portrait of life's most rewarding occupation: Parenthood. The Buckmans are a modern-day family facing the age-old dilemma of trying to raise children the 'right' way. At the center of the storm is Gil (Steve Martin) who manages to keep his unique sense of humor while attempting to maintain a successful career and be a loving husband and parent all at the same time. As Gil and the rest of the Buckmans discover being the 'perfect' parent often means just letting children be themselves.System Requirements:Runtime: 124 minsFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: COMEDY Rating: PG - 13 UPC: 025193236524 Manufacturer No: 61032365

Amazon.com essential video:
Ron Howard's 1989 hit, written by fellow family men Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel (Splash, A League of Their Own), is an original comedy about contemporary life and the eternal responsibilities of raising children. Steve Martin has never been better than as a dedicated husband and father trying (and inevitably failing, as do most of us) to balance the demands of his kids and his job. The actor, like his character, throws himself into the part quite touchingly, never more so than in a scene where a hired clown fails to show up at a children's party and Martin's character unabashedly provides the entertainment. Good as Martin is, this is actually an ensemble piece with numerous actors playing members of the same family, with cross-generational joys and disappointments in the air--and parents in conflict, children in love, and so on. Jason Robards is very good as a patriarch who finally accepts the reality that the son he adores (Tom Hulce) is a major screwup. --Tom Keogh

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Crude
It seems the only thing that kept this movie from being rated R is the lack of nudity. Full of off-color humor and situations that will have you reaching for the remote when kids are around. Teen sex, pregnancy, language, and suggestive site gags ruin what could be a good premise for a movie -- siblings raising their own families in the shadow of a preferred son. Not the the family movie it appears to be.

Parenthood (Special Edition)

Great service from Amazon, as always!!!!
Super good family movie!!

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - A lot of misery for a comedy
I am definitely in the minority here, but for me this movie didn't work. The cast is incredible and the acting is really, really good but I just didn't find the situations that funny. Steve Martin is one of my favorite actors and I enjoyed watching him as well as all the other siblings as they interacted. The acting alone would have lead me to give a 5-star rating.

What bothered me was so many of the "humorous" situations weren't humorous. The disfunction in many cases was so over ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Forget "Cheaper By The Dozen"; this one's the real deal!
This has become one of my favorite Ron Howard films. Steve Martin has done family fare before--such as the recent "Cheaper By The Dozen" films--but "Parenthood" seems closer to reality as it chronicles the successes & failures of family life. Martin is brilliant as usual as a man struggling to juggle his job with parenting...and failing spectacularly as it so often happens in real life. Martin gets first billing, but he is supported by a superb supporting cast. Dysfunction runs rampant among brothers, ... Read More
