Amazon.com essential video:
An episodic account of a family of roving sheepherders in Australia. Paddy Carmody (Robert Mitchum) loves being "someone whose home is where the sun goes down," but his wife (Deborah Kerr) and teenage son are tired of the nomadic life and want to settle down. Director Fred Zinnemann (From Here to Eternity) takes a wonderfully laid-back approach to this likable material, emphasizing the refreshingly grown-up relationship between Mitchum and Kerr as well as the stark scenic attractions of Australia--a continent that, in 1960, was still unfamiliar terrain for the movies. Puckish, portly Peter Ustinov provides the lion's share of the comic relief. One of the high points is a sheep-shearing sequence (the normally self-assured Mitchum was so nervous about accidentally harming an animal that he required a few bottles of beer for fortification before shooting the scene). The Sundowners scored five Oscar nominations, including acting nods for Kerr and Glynis Johns, but won none. --Robert Horton

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Star Performances Are Better Than the Film
The movie takes place in the outback of Australia. It is about an itinerant family of sheep tenders: Deborah Kerr, Robert Mitchem, and friend Peter Ustinov. The scenery and the acting is far better than the movie plot itself. With lessor actors, this would have a totally boring movie, but with these fine actors, it is pretty good. I give it 4 stars for acting and 2 for everything else. A movie that should be reserved for TV.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The Sundowners
Ordered on 14 June 2009 and received on 28 June 2009, a month earlier than I expected it. Fabulous old movie. Perfect picture and colour on Samsung DVD Player, but perfect picture but black and white on Rank Arena DVD Player. Not a problem for fans of the B & W genre. Great to see the established actors and the then-upcomers wearing their "young" faces. Thoroughly enjoyable and recommend to other fans of the "golden oldies", they made wonderful classic movies back then that hold their age well.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - A Different Kind Of Western
This was a unique western in that (1) there are no villains; (2) no gunfighters and no gunfight; (3) only one man is shot in the whole film, and (4) It takes place in Australia. It can't think of too many American classic-era western films taking place Down Under.

Most of it is a simple story of "Sundowners:" a group of migrant-type workers who go from job to job - in this case as "sheep drovers." These workers never have a permanent place to call home.

In this particular ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Life Goes On
Australia back in the 1920s, is just a tad different than it is today. Consider, your a drover and you have to bring 1200 sheep through the unforgiving outback. Doesn't sound difficult? Welcome to reality. The physical drain to perform this task would put almost anyone down and then add the personal problems faced by the drover and his wife who would really like to have her own place; but, the husband is bound by his wanderlust. See the problem? To arrive at an equitable solution is going to take ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A gentle study of a cheerful, loving Australian family whose whole life is one of adventure...
Frequently slow, solemn and simplistic, the films of Fred Zinneman are the work of a director who appears to have equated artistry with neatness, objectivity with aloofness, and significance with decorative, humorless reverence...

"The Sundowners" was perhaps the best 'Australian' film made up to that time, and was, incidentally, a perceptive study of a marriage: Deborah Kerr was the wife who wanted to settle down, and Robert Mitchum the husband who didn't... It reveals much about their life ... Read More
