Product Description: Academy Award® Golden Globe® and BAFTA nominee for Best Foreign Film JOYEUX NOEL (Merry Christmas) tells the true-life story of the spontaneous Christmas Eve truce declared by Scottish French and German troops in the trenches of World War I. Enemies leave their weapons behind for one night as they band together in brotherhood and forget about the brutalities of war. Diane Kr ger (Troy) Daniel Br hl (Good Bye Lenin!) and Benno F rmann (The Princess and the Warrior) head a first-rate international cast in a truly powerful must-see film.SPECIAL FEATURES:Interview with Writer/Director Christian CarionCommentary with Writer/Director Christian CarionSystem Requirements:Run Time: 116 minsFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: ACTION/ADVENTURE/MILITARY & WAR UPC: 043396150997 Manufacturer No: 15099
Amazon.com: Joyeux Noel captures a rare moment of grace from one of the worst wars in the history of mankind, World War I. On Christmas Eve, 1914, as German, French, and Scottish regiments face each other from their respective trenches, a musical call-and-response turns into an impromptu cease-fire, trading chocolates and champagne, playing soccer, and comparing pictures of their wives. But when Christmas ends, the war returns...Joyeux Noel has been justly accused of sentimentality, but if any subject warrants such an earnest and hopeful treatment, it's the horrors of trench warfare. The largely unknown cast--the more familiar faces include Diane Kruger (Troy), Daniel Bruhl (Good Bye Lenin!), Benno Furmann (The Princess and the Warrior), and Gary Lewis (Billy Elliot)--deliver low-key but effective performances as the movie dwells on the everyday elements of life in the face of war. Based on a true incident (though considerably fictionalized). --Bret Fetzer

It's better than the one of the WWII, where the American and the Japs run out of ammo, become friends but then kill each other. Don't remember the name.

No English subtitles available on this movie through Unbox.
Unless you understand French and German, I wouldn't recommend purchasing this movie through Unbox.
Other reviews stating there are subtitles must be referring to the DVD, and not Unbox.
Unfortunately, this fact is not stated in the product description. I had to wade through Amazon's help section to discover no subtitles are available with Unbox. I also discovered there are no refunds on digital products. ... Read More

I own this movie and everytime I watch it, I like it even more. Looking at the different "destinies" of german, french and scottish soldiers you will soon find out that they are pretty much alike, only that it is Europe 1914...
Very impressive and touching. Leaving it in the orininal languages makes it so much better!
Highly recommended. Thank you very much for a wonderful movie !

As a french woman who had her great-grand father taking part of this war (he fight in Verdun in 1916) and her grand-father in French Resistance during the WWII, I was very moved by this movie. It shows that, despite of horror, we need hope and desesperately look for humanity that exists in all of us. It also proves how stupid and useless war can be.
What I liked in this movie is that it shows that we are all equals : the German (who invaded my country in 1940) are shown in all their humanity. ... Read More

I grew up finding unexploded grenades, leftover ammo of various kinds in France. The tranches were all over around the woods I was running around as a kid, and we saw them gradually get filled up by the elements. I was always wondering as a kid, "how did they live in these tranches? for 4 years?!?". This gives us an insight into their lives, the lassitude they felt. They are very human, and they did not any more want to kill each other than any of us. The German officer who turned out to have a French wife ... Read More
