Amazon.com: PROFILES IN COURAGE : A KENNEDY LEGACY
EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS: AL ROKER, LISA SHARKEY AND SUSAN LESTER
HOSTED BY CAROLINE KENNEDY
This unprecedented documentary, produced on the 50th anniversary of the publication of John F. Kennedy's Pulitzer Prize winning book "Profiles in Courage", explores the ideals of political courage as set forth in the historic text. At the same time, it shows how the Kennedy family and the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation keep the Presidentpis legacy and commitment to public service alive through the annual Profile in Courage Award.
The documentary contains extremely rare moving images and still photos of the Kennedy family, from the formative years of JFK's childhood, to the WWII era, the early years of his marriage to Jacqueline Lee Bouvier Kennedy and the childhoods of Caroline and John Jr.
Profiles in Courage: A Kennedy Legacy also showcases historic footage of JFK's recovery from back surgery when he was recuperating from his operation and working on writing of the book.
In addition, the historic documentary pulls together the most inspirational moments from JFK's poignant speeches, that will help students and history buffs alike to understand how courage itself was a driving force behind America's 35th President.
"Let the public service be a proud and lively career." (JFK, State of the Union Message, January 30, 1961)
In 1956, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, a Jr. Senator from Massachusetts, inspired a nation with the true stories of eight Senators throughout history who demonstrated extraordinary political integrity in the face of enormous obstacles. The book, "Profiles in Courage," told of past Senators who, because of their principled actions, were often isolated and suffered politically and personally.
Known as the "Political Oscar," the Award, established in 1989 by the Kennedy Family, celebrates the courageous acts of public servants and continues to encourage elected officials to choose principles over partisanship <> to do what is right, rather than what is expedient. On May 22, 2006, U.S. Rep. John P. Murtha and former Navy General Counsel Alberto J. Mora joined the ranks of past recipients including Congressman John L. Lewis, President Gerald Ford, Senators Russell Feingold and John McCain, and the public servants of September 11.
In addition to Caroline Kennedy and Senator Ted Kennedy, we highlight Profile in Courage Award recipients: Congressman John Lewis, Congressman John Murtha, Congresswoman Hilda Solis, Alberto Mora & President Ford.
A small group of eminent Americans will provide historical commentary and context - intercut with priceless historical footage. Presidential historians Doris Kearns Goodwin and Michael Beschloss, Kennedy speechwriter Ted Sorensen and journalist Bob Woodward are among those who tell the Kennedy story.
