Editorial Review:

Description:
Latin Labor Day, September 1st, 1981 - Restored The Laguna Jazz Festival at the Irvine Bowl. Elvis may have been known as "The King of Rock and Roll," but to fans of Latin music icon, Tito Puente will always be "The King." Puente was responsible for making timbales a respectable solo instrument in Latin dance music and Latin jazz. He was also an accomplished player of the vibraphone, alto sax, bass, piano and drums, as well as an arranger and band leader. Puente's contribution to American music was honored with a U.S. Postal Service stamp cancellation mark. The following year, Tito received the National Endowment Award from President Clinton. Catch Tito full of power in his best days between recording contracts in 1981, as close to the folks as he ever was. A 74 minute percussion fiesta of nearly forgotten never published live video captured at the Irvine Bowl during the 1981 Laguna Jazz Festival. The DVD of the concert opens with two pieces of Alex Acu_a, drums, Efrain Toro, percussion, Eric Tillman, piano, Larry Klein, bass and Justo Almario, sax; followed by the main event featuring Tito Puente, timbales, "Patato" Valdez, congas, Mario Rivera, flute, Bobby Rodriquez, bass, Johnny Rodriguez, bongos and "Alfredito" Rodriguez, piano; the DVD is signed off by Miguel Cruz and his Latin Jazz Ensemble. Though Tito Puente is no longer physically with us, he died May 31, 2000, Tito Puente will live forever in the hearts of music fans the world over.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A great concert - restored.
The original concert was recorded for channel 9 and mastered on ¾ inch tape. Just after Tito's death the only copy, a second generation ½ inch tape of the original showing was found. In many hours, the 20 year old fading video material was digitized to the best of the source, color corrected, a green edging removed and the dynamic of the original single channel audio enhanced to pseudo stereo. You should treat it as a historic document. It shows Tito at his best before commercialism hit. Check ... Read More
