Born in 1483, Martin Luther (Joseph Fiennes) was an intelligent and principled young man who was studying law in early 16th century Germany when a close brush with death led him to follow a spiritual path and join a Catholic monastery. Under the guidance of Father Johann von Staupitz (Bruno Ganz), Luther became a valued member of the monastery's hierarchy, and as a sign of his trust, Father Johann asked Luther to join him for a voyage to Rome as part of church business. Luther was appalled by the corrupt practices of the leading church officials, in particular the sale of "indulgences," in which the wealthy could purchase forgiveness for a wide variety of sins. Luther left the monastery to study theology in Wittenberg; a keen student, he later became a professor and won the support of King Frederick the Wise (Peter Ustinov), who also recognized the potential controversy of Luther's iron principles. An excellent coverage of Martin Luther and his struggle against the Catholic Church. An inspiring movie!

This is a good movie and a decent portrayal of Luther. The plot is well done for the volumes of information covered, the acting is adequate, and the costumes are outstanding.
Some of the actors' personal beliefs portions of the historical representations and the film is definitely from the perspective of the Lutheran Church. While relatively ballanced, one must still keep the presuppositions of those who created it in mind when viewing the historical material.

Fair video, in that all movies/dvd's give the producer's view which is not necessarily the truth of what actually happen as they make film fit their story line.

This DVD is excellent. Luther is not only portrayed accurately and well, it leaves you with awe of his struggle with the apostasy of the Papists of his day.
Joseph Fennes really does this part with excellence and his ability to be what he is acting is absolutely wonderful. If you love history, and love to see it portrayed accurately, within reason of course, this film will bring to you an edifying visual encounter with the way Yahweh deals with the hearts of men.

I thought it did a good job of depicting the time period and outlining the major points of Luther's life. My previous knowledge of Luther when I saw the film several years ago consisted of generalities only, and ... Read More
