Based on a true story, this Brian De Palma film casts Michael J. Fox as a soldier in Vietnam in a squad led by Sean Penn. While on patrol, in the wake of an ambush that has left friends dead, they kidnap and rape a Vietnamese woman--then murder her. But Fox, one of the soldiers who refused to participate in the rape, is so appalled by the killing that he reports it--and finds himself being treated as the villain. Penn is scarily tough as the vindictive soldier and De Palma does a solid job of re-creating the crime, making it a thing of horror. Only gave this two stars because the filming was so good. This is programmed propaganda because in the actual event, the squad was composed of African Americans. This is another case (and I have examples galore!) of Hollowwood turning out a "Propaganda Product" and passing it off as a documentary. Please note how the glowing reviews such as L. S. don't mention this major change in the film, though she says that the "actors are perfect for their roles". Right.

I met a few Low-Lifers in Vietnam but they were Low-Lifers from birth. The War changed People but it didn't really change a person's Character. The Media has been trying to make us look bad since 67. They outdid themselves with this piece of garbage.

For many years I avoided Viet Nam era war movies. It seemed hollywood was never able to present a reasonable portrayal of the period. This movie never seemed to grope with that problem. I've read reviews of this film that criticize Fox's acting (both his ability and style), trying to say he's no different in this film than in his prior comedy roles. I was a little underwhelmed by our stars performances in say the first half hour. It wasn't really until the entrance of the Vietnamese actress that things started to 'get real' in terms of acting. From the point where she enters, you can feel the tension in the air, and seems to bring the boys to a whole new level. Her acting is fantastic. They couldn't have found better for the part. She was completely beleivable and truly heartbreaking in her unaffected playing out of the role.

In 1967 and 1968, I was squad leader in Vietnam in the 25th Infantry Division. This is yet another Hollywood movie that portrays Vietnam combat vets as perverts, and heartless killers. Nothing could be farther from the truth. War is brutal and ugly and the Vietnam War was no exception, but young Americans served honorably in Vietnam as Americans have in other wars.
