Editorial Review:
Amazon.com: Art imitates art in Flickers, a charming, six-part Masterpiece Theatre mini-series from 1980. Bob Hoskins, who made a big screen splash that same year in The Long Good Friday, stars as Arnie Cole, a fast-talking rogue (replete with bowler, bushy mustache, and full-on Cockney accent) intent on making his mark in the burgeoning silent film business by producing his own "flickers." The fact that he has no capital to invest in his dream poses a small problem, but when he encounters Maud (Frances de la Tour), a reasonably wealthy and considerably classier woman about to give birth to another (and long gone) man's child, the two make a marriage of convenience, exchanging her money for his willingness to make an honest woman of her. Hoskins and de la Tour are a joy, and watching their relationship evolve from what he calls "the best love match since Jekyll and Hyde" into one of true affection, as she learns to accept his astonishing lack of couth and he manages to take some of the starch out of her, is Flickers' principal delight. Moreover, not only does series creator-writer Roy Clarke do a skillful and humorous job of depicting the vicissitudes inherent in early 20th Century movie-making; he also populates the cast with enough vivid, eccentric characters (all played with customary gusto by a host of terrific Brit actors) to make the off-camera action play like a wacky silent film itself. It all takes a while to get going, but by the final episode, when real tears are shed, egos are punctured, painful truths are confessed, and tragedy is visited on Arnie and his troupe, Flickers will leave you wanting more. Neither Merchant-Ivory highbrow nor American sit-com stupid, this one is a treat, notwithstanding a shortage of bonus materials. --Sam Graham
Description: Bob Hoskins (Mona Lisa, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Enemy at the Gates) stars as Arnie Cole, a lovable Cockney rogue who wants to move up in the fledgling silent-film industry. Prowling for potential investors, Arnie finds haughty, hypercritical Maud (Frances de la Tour, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Rising Damp)and gets far more than he bargained for. While keeping creditors at bay, squabbling actors on task, and an egotistical director under budget, Arnie and Maud try to build a business based on make-believe. In the process, they manage to kindle an unorthodoxbut very realromance.
Crackling with droll dialogue and punctuated by moments of true poignancy, Emmy®-nominated Flickers takes you behind the cameras for a hilarious look at the eccentric entrepreneurs, ambitious actors, and assorted other oddballs who populated the British movie business in the days before talkies.

I was fascinated by this movie when it was first shown on Masterpiece Theatre many years ago and several times wished I could see it again. When it was offered on DVD I immediately ordered it and it was just as much fun to watch the second time. This stars two of my favorites, Bob Hoskins and Frances de la Tour along with lots of other lovable characters. This takes place in the early years of silent film making. Arnie Cole (Hoskins) tries to break into this business without enough capital while ... Read More

Produced in 1980 and penned by britcom veteran Roy Clarke (Keeping Up Appearances, Last of the Summer Wine, Open All Hours), Flickers is a light, entertaining six-part comedy-drama (with the emphasis on comedy) set amid the burgeoning film industry in 1920's England.
The series stars Bob Hoskins (Mrs. Henderson Presents, Thick as Thieves) as Arnie Cole, an outspoken Cockney with little dress sense and even less manners; yet despite his faults, he is shrewd, determined and hard-working. ... Read More

I saw this when it was on Masterpiece Theater, and enjoyed it then. It's even better than I remembered it - watched the last 4 episodes in one sitting. Not too many films are that enjoyable! Well worth the money.
