Editorial Review:
Description: Victory at Sea, a 26-episode series on World War II, represented one of the most ambitious documentary undertakings of early network television.
The series premiered on the last Sunday of October 1952, and subsequent episodes played each Sunday afternoon through May 1953. Each half-hour installment dealt with some aspect of World War II naval warfare and highlighted each of the sea war's major campaigns. That drama was enhanced by the program's sententious voice-over narration and by Richard Rogers's stirring musical score.
Features: Design for War The Pacific Boils Over Sealing the Breach Midway is East Mediterranean Mosaic Guadalcanal Rings Around Rabaul Marenstrum Sea and Sand Beneath the Southern Cross The Magnetic North Conquest of Micronesia Melanesian Nightmare Roman Renaissance D-Day Killers and the Kill The Turkey Shoot Two if by Sea The Battle for Leyte Gulf Return of the Allies Full Fathom Five The Fate of Europe Target Suribachi The Road to Mandalay Suicide for Glory Design for Peace

While watching an episode of Victory at Sea on Public TV, the subject of which was the South Pacific, where my father was stationed in the Navy, I thought I saw him. I was able to buy this DVD at a very good price. Turns out, upon further review, it wasn't my father but a good deal nonetheless. I wouldn't rely on those reviewers who panned it for its sound or picture quality. It's just fine for what it is.

Before you watch movies like Pearl harbor, midway, or any of the other hollywood naval epic flicks, view this outstanding 26 part series that was out in 1952 and 1953. It shows the actual events compiled from 13,000 hours of film shot by all the antagonists of world war two. A bit grainy, the sound is at times not the best, but this is real naval war archival footage filmed by all the players. A must for history buffs or those that desire to see history, not just read somebodys version of it.

The best documentary ever produced is still the best documentary ever produced. This recap of the events before WWII, and during, and up through the end, are awe inspiring and presented in a history lesson on video. It inspired me as a youth, and I am still thrilled by the presentation of the greatest challenge to our country. I rate it as the best it can be.
Former: Capt. Combat Engineers, US Armed Forces, Occupation of Germany.

I picked this up in the $5 DVD bin at Walmart and have enjoyed it. I remember seeing some of the episodes as reruns when I was a youngster, but it is nice to see the full series. This version has not been remastered or enhanced, but what do you expect for $5. Some of the finer points of the war are glossed over, but in the end the good guys win and the bad guys get what they deserve.
