Amazon.com: The classic to clunker ratio is still extraordinarily high, though The Simpsons' sixth season could give some devoted viewers pause. The show that takes cheeky delight in mooning television convention gives us "Another Simpsons Clip Show" and its first season-ending cliffhanger, "Who Shot Mr. Burns?" And, as does Bart in "A Star Is Burns," we should all feel a little dirty at the "cheap cartoon crossover" appearance of Jay Sherman (Jon Lovitz), designed to give a boost to the ill-fated animated series The Critic. But this is just beard-stroking tongue-clucking regarding a season that delivered episodes that rank in the hallowed The Simpsons pantheon, among them, "Homer Badman," in which lust for a gummy Venus de Milo, peeled from the behind of an unwitting babysitter, makes Homer the object of feminist protest and tabloid TV fodder, and "Homer the Great," in which Homer is discovered to be the Chosen One to lead the secret society, "The Stonecutters" ("Who holds back the electric car/Who made Steve Guttenberg a star?/We do!"). Several episodes take their inspiration from classic films and books: Hitchcock's Rear Window ("Bart of Darkness"); Michael Crichton's Westworld and Jurassic Park ("Itchy and Scratchy Land"); and Stephen King and Ray Bradbury ("Treehouse of Horror V").
This season's roster of guest voices is also especially impressive, including Winona Ryder as "Lisa's Rival," Meryl Streep as Rev. Lovejoy's bad-seed daughter ("She's like a Milk Dud," a smitten Bart laments. "Sweet on the outside, poison on the inside"), the late Anne Bancroft in "Fear of Flying"; Patrick Stewart in "Homer the Great"; Mel Brooks and Susan Sarandon in "Homer vs. Patty and Selma," and Mandy Patinkin as Lisa's future fiancée in the surprisingly moving "Lisa's Wedding." There has, of late, been a feud a-brewin' between fans of The Simpsons and Family Guy. Which show is funnier? Has The Simpsons lost it? Is Family Guy a Simpsons-wannabe? Hey; Can't we all just laugh along? Best to just marvel at another exemplary Simpsons season that, to quote Homer in "Lisa's Rival," delivers it all: "The terrifying lows, the dizzying highs, the creamy middles." --Donald Liebenson

I was very happy with my purchase. The DVDs arrived in perfect condition and quicker then expected. This DVD set was one of the first things I've ever bought on Amazon.com and it went so well that I've bought a couple more DVDs and many books from the site and been pleased with them all! I would highly recommend the site.

Seeing this season brings back the fondness and humor that I first had with the Simpsons and try not to lament the last seven years or so now that the Simpsons humor has seemed to become to stale and recycled these past few years. I'm sure if anyone remembers the year when it first showed is the episode of when Mr.Burns is shot after another of his devious ideas has seemed to push the people of Springfield past their limit. As you watch the episodes it just seems so much better as these were the ... Read More

Just arrived yesterday. I opened it expecting to find a coupon telling me how I can get the box case instead of the annoying and useless novelty case. No coupon so I looked around the web and found an image of it. It had a number to call, I called and the number has been disconnected. A little more searching and I found out that the number referred you to a website. I went there and there was nothing about getting a replacement box. Apparently, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has decided, despite ... Read More

I ordered this season along with seasons seven and eight, and while I had to reorder season eight because it contained two copies of the same disk, the other two were as they should be. So, incidentally, was the new copy of season eight once I reordered it. But I'll discuss the rest of those seasons in separate reviews since I actually came here to discuss the sixth season. This season is so far the only one I've received in the head-shaped packaging. After reading all the negative reviews where sometimes ... Read More

New and undamaged. The box is fun and different than all the other Simpson seasons.
