Amazon.com essential video: A harsh, cutting, and wickedly funny look into the darker side of show business, Swimming with Sharks tells the story of a naive and eager assistant (Frank Whaley) and his slide into the cutthroat world of Hollywood power struggles. Whaley goes to work for a top movie executive (Kevin Spacey) who almost immediately begins to wear down his new assistant's exuberance with his whining, egomaniacal tantrums and relentless verbal abuse, even as he promises his young charge a chance to move up the ladder. Culminating in a violent and ultimately ironic confrontation between mentor and protégé, this brutal 1994 black comedy benefits from some razor-sharp writing and terrific comic turns from both Whaley (Hoffa) as one whose idealism is irrevocably shattered, and Spacey (Seven, L.A. Confidential), deliciously funny as a caustic, belligerent, and ultimately sad figure. A savage indictment of both the movie business and the price of ambition, Swimming with Sharks is one of the best black comedies in recent years. --Robert Lane

This is one of my favorite films because of its message. I find it depressing (but not surprising) that so many people missed the message.
The message is simple yet profound: "Life is hard. Know what you want or you won't be happy." Perhaps the message is too subtle for much of the movie going public.
Is this film a masterpiece? No. I would have given it 4.5 stars, if I could. There are minor flaws in its execution. But overall I love it for what it reveals about ... Read More

People see parallels with "The Player", which is valid, but I see "Sweet Smell of Success" in the biting dialogue and ammoral behavior.
This is a Hollywood sleeper, the inside story of a studio. It is said to be based on a big producer who is still in the biz.
Spacey just destroys Frank Whaley, turning him from a film school idealist to a killer. The best line is when Spacey informs Whaley of the facts of Hollywood life.
"You can't sleep your way to the top, like Dawn. We're guys. ... Read More

Now here is a movie for those looking for an attack on white-collar corporate office life, the spinning gears of Hollywood. And not overblown with big-budget special effects, scatological humor and saccarine-coated deluded big-screen implausibilities. For those looking for something really strongly written by a veteran of it's field and performed by pure-blooded thespains in the low-budget indie vein.
"Swimming With Sharks" seems to owe more than a little ... Read More

Brilliantly acted satire that was overlooked at the box office. The end is very disturbing and was the only part of the movie I didn't like and didn't feel it fit the story, otherwise I would have given it five stars. Five stars for the performances though, not one weak link in this film! Anyone interested in Hollywood and movies will want to see this.

This is one of our favorite movies.....but, when we sat down to enjoy it, the last 2 scene segments would not play. Very unsettling!
