Amazon.com essential video:
Like a pumpkin that transforms into a carriage, some very shrewd casting (and the charisma of Julia Roberts, in particular) morphed this story of a Hollywood whore into a Disneyfied Cinderella story--and a mainstream megahit. This is the movie that made Roberts a star; the charm of her personality helping tremendously to carry viewers over the rough spots in the script (which was originally a cynical tale about prostitution called 3000--after the amount of money Richard Gere's character pays the prostitute to stay with him for the week). Gere is the silver-haired Wall Street knight who sweeps streetwalker Roberts into a fantasy world of room service at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel and fashion boutique shopping on Rodeo Drive. The supporting cast is also appealing, including Laura San Giacomo as Roberts's hooker pal, Hector Elizondo as the hotel manager, Jason Alexander, Ralph Bellamy, and Hank Azaria. Now, is this something you want your sons and daughters to see? That's entirely up to you. --Jim Emerson

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - ROMANTIC COMEDY
I have been a fan of this movie from the very first time I viewed it many years ago. I never get tired of this movie because it has so much to offer both male and female viewers. Richard Gere certainly fits the part of business man and reluctant lover while Julia Roberts is bright and bubbly through out and the romantic ending blows me away every time. I consider Prety Woman to be a clasic.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Cinderella Meets King Midas
"Pretty Woman" harks back to various well-trodden themes: the Pygmalion legend, the prostitute with a heart of gold, and the poor soul who teaches the wealthy person the true values in life. Julia Roberts is a hooker who is rescued from life on the streets by the wealthy and ruthless business tycoon Richard Gere, and she rescues him from a life of reckless power and greed by teaching him business ethics and morality. The audience, because of the acting, the L.A. setting, and the clever way the film ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Entertaining
Movie ratings are always very subjective, with one person's gem being another's trash. That said, I enjoyed the movie, despite it being a bit unrealistic. If your goal is just to be entertained you will likely enjoy this movie. If you are out to play movie critic you will find lots of problems. 4 stars

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Isn't it cute to be a hooker?
Hollywood took some of the most ludicris ideas and turned them into gold. While we have departed from the traditional "feel good" movie for anyone or anything and have more harsh realities in popular movies, this was one of the last few movies from the 80s / early 90s that made us think anything is possible. But still, a Hollywood hooker and a cut throat business tycoon? I guess it could happen.

This was the movie that launched Julia Roberts into superstardom, based on her photogenic ... Read More

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - The movie is a reminder...all women are whores.
Worst movie and plot of all time. Women appeal to this movie because deep down, their all prostitutes who are looking to be rescued by a rich man. Richard Gere hires Julia Roberts(the whore) as his beyotch for the week for the amount of $3,000. After spending 6 days with her, roughly 4 to 5 hours a night, he decides he is in love with this whore. Now, Julia Roberts character(Vivian) over the course of the week seems to forget she is a prostitute, and gets easily offended when someone reminds her. Don't ... Read More
