One biography calls Bob Hope's monologues "breezy. irreverent and spiced heavily with pointed allusions to current affairs." But when you're as topical as Hope was, you need new jokes every week. He accordingly hired a team of writers - as many as eight - to come up with jokes. Then he pitted them against each other, making them sit together and listen as each joke was read aloud. If the writers laughed - no mean trick, since each was pitching his own jokes to Hope - then it got used.
