Amazon.com essential video: Before The Dick Van Dyke Show, suburbia was never portrayed on television as a haven of sophistication. We never followed Ozzie Nelson to work. And we never, ever fantasized what Ward and June Cleaver did behind closed doors. But Your Show of Shows veteran Carl Reiner's groundbreaking series broke the staid, sitcom mold. Just consider Mary Tyler Moore's Laura Petrie, the ravishing wife of Dick Van Dyke's comedy writer, Rob Petrie. "I'm just a housewife," she proclaims in the episode "To Tell or Not to Tell," just before breaking into an incendiary bossa nova in the Petrie living room. In "The Return of Happy Spangler," she is jokingly identified as Jackie Kennedy. But the comparison is apt. She's got style (those capri pants scandalized the show's sponsors!), she's got grace, and when Moore came into her own as a gifted comedienne, she took her stock character to dizzy new heights. The Dick Van Dyke Show boasted a peerless ensemble, gold-standard writing, and characters who became icons: Son Ritchie (played by Larry Matthews), man-hungry Sally Rogers (Rose Marie), old school "human joke machine" Buddy Sorrell (Morey Amsterdam), and tyrannical boss Alan Brady (Reiner).
Incredibly, the show was nearly canceled after its first season. Executive producer Sheldon Leonard championed the series, and CBS moved the Petries to follow the top-rated Beverly Hillbillies. The rest is television history. Unlike the high-concept Hillbillies, the more sophisticated Dick Van Dyke Show's appeal was in its more grounded situations and three-dimensional characters, each of whom were given ample opportunities to shine. Rob's deft and daft juggling of his glamorous career and harried home life inspired some of the best episodes, but at the heart of this series' timeless appeal was the palpable chemistry between Rob and Laura, as witness their sudden embrace at the moving conclusion of "The Square Triangle." A pop culture benchmark, The Dick Van Dyke Show is must-own television. --Donald Liebenson

When there is nothing on cable, as is frequently the case, I love being able to pop in an episode of the Dick Van Dyke Show and there are a LOT of them in this package. The menu set-up is very well done, skip the intro or not, etc., and the quality of everything else leaves nothing to be desired.
If you were a fan of this show, or just a fan of good sitcoms that are always G rated, you will love this set. A lot of money for DVDs but to own the entire series of a show is great and this show ... Read More

I was too young in 1961-66 to watch this on it's first run, but when syndication re-ran the show, I gave up a lot of baseball, playing Army and catching frogs to watch every episode. Two reasons, it was absolutely hilarious and fullfill my boyhood crush on Mary Tyler Moore, WHAT A MOM!
The show was comic genious Carl Reiner's brainchild that almost never happened. Reiner approached the "powers-that-be" with a pilot called "Head of the Family" that failed completely. Fortunately, executive ... Read More

"The Dick Van Dyke Show" has got to be the best show EVER! I know not many 12-year-olds watch this show, or spend their days memorizing the scripts (I want to be an actress and dancer, so I love to memorize these scripts) but they should! I have grown up watching this show with my parents, because they grew up watching it. I have had THE biggest crush on Mr. Van Dyke since I was probably 2...maybe younger. Ms. Moore is probably the person whom I admire most, Laura Petrie is too. Nobody needs the bad ... Read More

Well, the old "Dick Van Dyke Show" was one of the FIRST .. and BEST .. of the old sit-coms. Carl Reiner, of course, was a "progenitor" of the long-running series, and one it's writers .. and one of it's (comedic) members, as "Alan Brady". .. Dick Van D, Morey Amsterdam, Rose Marie, Richard Deacon, Mary Tyler Moore and their supporting cast were one of the BEST of a very-enduring comedic way .. from one of the BEST of the "old days" .. of originality, wit, conciseness and quality (IMHO).

When we look back at television before it got serious and complicated, it was entertaining to the point of pure innocence and enjoyment. A big part of that was the Dick Van Dyke show. These shows can be watched over and over. That's when you know you have good quality TV. Being a child of the sixties, there were just a few comedy's that my friends still talk about; Andy Griffith, Dick Van Dyke, The Munsters and even though these were a few years earlier, The Honeymooners. I have all these in my DVD collection ... Read More
