Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A Gem !
I cannot get enough of good westerns. Unfortunately, I suspect that many of the westerns of the 1930's and 1940's are decaying or have already disintegrated or otherwise been lost. For instance, it seems strange to me that I have not yet been able to find most of Randolph Scott's movies in digitally remastered and pristine condition. This film, Dodge City, makes me wish Errol Flynn had been more active in westerns in his prime (1935-1940). The quality of this film (acting and script superb) and the ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The Australian Cowboy
"That's one fight you Yanks didn't win. But take it easy. We'll send the vet right over!" -- Tex

Errol Flynn cut a dashing trail through the American West for the first time in Dodge City. Flynn, an Australian, always worried he would not be accepted as a western hero. But rather than mold him to a type, Flynn's charisma and charm helped put his own stamp on the genre, making for a delightful if bit different entry of wagon trains and wild towns. Everything about this western is ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - WONDROUS WESTERN CLASSIC IS LOADS OF FUN
WOW! What a greatly entertaining classic this is! Director Michael Curtiz really cranks it up a notch with this one. This wonderful, technicolor Western is exciting, funny, tragic, suspenseful, romantic...and a little bit of everything else, whew! It had a great hero [Errol Flynn as Wade Hatton], a great villain [Victor Jory], the great guy you love to hate [Bruce Cabot], the adorable little kid and, of course, Olivia. All about the unbridled, lawless cowtown of Dodge City, Kansas, and the attempts ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Archetypal Western with Flynn's formula for Adventure. Still alot of fun.
1939 was probally the greatest year in Hollywood history. Cinemas were just packed with amazing films in seemingly every genre. The Western which had floundered for most of the decade had come full circle in '39 with John Ford's "Stagecoach", the film that set the standard for the modern Western and this film.

Michael Curtiz directs with his usual surehand, utilizing beautiful technicolor photography that has to rank as some of the loveliest of the period. The action scenes are directed ... Read More
