Amazon.com:
Annette Bening's outstanding performance is the best reason to see Being Julia, a highly melodramatic adaptation of the 1937 novel Theatre by W. Somerset Maugham. With a prestigious pedigree (director Istvan Szabo and screenwriter Ronald Harwood share impressive theatrical backgrounds) and a stellar cast including Jeremy Irons, Bruce Greenwood, and Juliet Stevenson, the film's backstage and onstage theatrics take place in pre-World War II London, when the venerable actress Julia (Bening) fends off middle-age by romancing a stage-struck young American (Shaun Evans) in a calculated attempt to retain some youthful vitality while airing her own dirty laundry onstage in a glorious act of divine diva behavior. Treating life and theater as one big play in which she's the perpetual star, Julia's nothing if not a master thespian, and Bening's got all the chops to keep her in the spotlight. If the film isn't quite worthy of Bening's excellence, at least it gives her performance the showcase it deserves. -- Jeff Shannon

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Probably the best thing Bening has done
This adaptation of a Somerset Maugham story is probably Annette Bening's best film so far. She plays Julia Lambert, a 40-something London stage actress who undergoes a midlife crisis when she gets swept off her feet and has a fling with an American employee of her producer/director husband (Jeremy Irons) -- who is half her age. The kid is a cad, of course, and Julia eventually has her heart broken -- and then decides on a particularly delicious revenge, involving the kid, her husband (with whom she ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A Force to be Reckoned With
This gem of a movie is based on a short story by Somerset Maughm. It is about a vivacious woman named Julia who is played by Annette Bening. Julia is an actress, an artiste, who is so good at her profession that it's hard to tell where the actress ends and the real Julia starts. She is at the top of her form in English theater but is worried about getting older. She is married to Jeremy Irons and they have an 'arrangement' such that each of them has their sexual independence. Julia is very narcissistic ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - "Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries" " Don't take it Serious; it's too Mysterious".
Set in London 1938, the film focuses on a highly successful and extremely popular theatre actress Julia Lambert (Annette Bening). Married with one son, a woman whose got it all, but, there's still a wanting, a yearning, something is missing. Julia's fast approaching middle age, but the fire seems to have gone out, lacking in passion for her talent, tedious of late and stuck on auto drive. Julia's gradual disillusionment has made her feel tired of it all, lost, something has to give. Julia prompts her husband, ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Behind the curtains of threatre!
Wow! an amazing piece of cinema indeed. A film about simply the joy of acting and threatre. The lead role played awfully well by the Remarkable Annette Benning, she just stole the whole show. Jeremy Irons as usual gives a performence close to perfection, never fails to potray any emotion beautifuly. Annette, you can never say enough about her in the film. She is just fantastic. She will snatch your heart away. Watch her in the role of a wife, a mother, a lover and a performer!! you will be overwhelmed. Definately ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Fun Melodramatics, With A Touch of Maugham
Somehow I missed this film when it was in theaters, and I don't understand why since Annette Bening, Jeremy Irons, and Michael Gambon are among my "must-sees". Julia Lambert is a 45 year old theater star who is burned out and bored with her successful career playing melodramatic romances. A young American appears and a brief affair ensues, with recriminations and a delicious and complicated revenge when things turn sour.

This film is based on a short story by Somerset Maugham, and its faithful to ... Read More
