With apologies to Columbo's Peter Falk, there's never been a television detective with quite so many nervous, tic 'n' quirk quotient of Tony Shalhoub's neurotic, OCD-bedeviled Adrian Monk. Composer Jeff Beal (Pollock, HBO's Carnivale) picks up the many loose threads of the lovably obsessed gumshoe's personality and weaves them into one of contemporary television's most consistently pleasing jazz-rooted scores. Anchored by a jaunty, guitar-driven theme (featured here in versions that span the show's pilot, regular series and an extended mix) that invokes the carefree verve of Django Reinhardt, this generous, 36-track CD contains music from all of the program's original dozen episodes. Though he infuses his work here with a variety of cool jazz incarnations, Beal's bright, evocative musical cues also occasionally recall the modernist rhythmic inventions of such early, angular Stewart Copeland scores as Rumble Fish and Wall Street. --Jerry McCulley

CD is very good, but the disappointing thing that the title track is not the Randy Newman version It's a Jungle Out There

Unlike some of the previous reviews, I found this soundtrack amazing. So who cares if there is not "It's A Jungle Out There"? It is a must for any Monk fan! The songs are well played out and fantastic. I think it qualifies for being as good as a movie soundtrack. It's zesty and jazzy. That is why I give this soundtrack 5 stars. Keep 'em comin' Jeff!!!!!

To begin with, I am a big MONK fan from 'Day 1'.
Without a doubt, where would the show be without the music. And like with so many other Monk fans, I am disappointed that when the TV soundtrack finally came out that the 2nd. theme song wasn't included; by all rights it should have. It would be great if Jeff Beal Produced a second album to compliment the first & adding the other theme song--IT'S A JUNGLE OUT THERE.

On this CD the song I really wanted to hear was "It's A Jungle Out There" by Randy Newman. I was shocked that this CD didn't have the song because it's the THEME SONG for cryin' out loud! It's at the beginning of every episode! Very disappointing.
