Amazon.com: No relation to the 1992 Clint Eastwood film of almost the same name, The Unforgiven is based--like John Ford's The Searchers--on a novel by Alan LeMay. Again the story focuses on a frontier family divided by racism. But instead of the complex, endlessly resonant demonology of the Ford picture, John Huston aims in The Unforgiven for a pat, civil-rights-era allegory of loving solidarity triumphing over societal prejudice--and, to be sure, some noble but dangerous Kiowas. Burt Lancaster and Audrey Hepburn costar as, respectively, the eldest son of a ranching family and the beloved sister who's not his sister at all, but an Indian. However, the film's dark heart belongs to Joseph Wiseman as an avenging ghost who materializes out of the wind, and Lillian Gish as the matriarch who will do whatever she must to protect her clan. With Audie Murphy, Charles Bickford, Albert Salmi, John Saxon, and Doug McClure. --Richard T. Jameson

Takes a while to lay down the plot. And the latter half of the movie is kind of an over-long gunfight with Indians having nothing better to do than riding around the house getting shot down. The story and frontier setting of the story are somewhat interesting, but am I mistaken or does Audrey Hepburn have blue eyes? How many Indians have blue eyes? That and some of the dialogue between Burt and the cheif didn't seem particularly strong, but suspend disbeleif as required and you have an odd tale ... Read More

"The Unforgiven" is a wonderful movie starring Burt lancaster and Audrey Hepburn that weaves a number of themes into a tapestry of beautiful colors. It depicts, with a great deal of honesty, the struggles of the pioneer families in the Southwest, fighting the Kiowa tribes, the difficult climate and the stubborn soil. Further it shows the racism and brutality that existed on the part of the Kiowas, determined to hold their land and their people against the invaders, and the pioneers, equally determined ... With a stellar cast who do not disappoint, 'The Unforgiven' has been a favorite since childhood. Rachel (Audrey Hepburn) is revealed to be an Indian, unknown to anyone except her mother (Lillian Gish). A band of Kiowas hear of it, and Rachel's Indian brother visits the house to make a trade for her. When the family refuses, they are attacked in some of the best fighting scenes I've watched. An eerie, unusual twist is added in the film when Ben (Burt Lancaster) returns from Wichita with a baby grand piano ... Read More
