Editorial Review:
Product Description: COLD-SOULED EBENEZER SCROOGE HAS A CHANGE OF HEART AFTER SPIRIT VISITATIONS ON CHRISTMAS EVE. FOLKS MIGHT NOT HAVE HAD MUCH TO SING ABOUT IN 1840'S ENGLAND, BUT THIS MUSICAL WILL MAKE YOU BELIEVE OTHERWISE. KENNETH MORE'S MUSICAL NUMBER AS THE GHOST OF CHRISTMAS PRESENT IS ESPECIALLY ENTERTAINING.
Amazon.com: A mixed bag as variations on A Christmas Carol go, this 1970 British musical tells the usual story of Scrooge (Albert Finney) and his spirits on Christmas Eve, although the whole thing is set to music by Leslie Bricusse. Except for Finney's feisty and involved performance, however, there isn't much to recommend this. The songs, which absorb so much of the evolving story line and emotions, are not all that good. Plenty of support, however, from the likes of Roy Kinnear (Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory) and Dame Edith Evans (Tom Jones), the handsome production is directed by veteran Ronald Neame (The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie). --Tom Keogh

How wonderful that my childhood memories can be passed onto my children - We watch "Scrooge" every year while decorating the tree, and we all get a feeling of joy and hope at the end when Scrooge gives all the Cratchett family toys, food and money to help their son get better - Such hopefulness in a "less than hopeful" world right now - I wish everyone could be visited by three ghosts!!!!!!!!!! Peace and Joy

I saw this when it was new 30+ yrs ago. I have watched it almost every year since it came out on tape and given dozens of copies to others over the years. It has a timeless message, the music has never been equaled, and we all need "the milk of human kindness" reminder throughout the year. You can't go wrong with movie, its great.

Albert Finney gives the performance of a lifetime in this holiday classic. His transformation from a dreadful miser to a repenting philanthropist is nothing short of amazing. I am NOT a fan of musicals, except for a few main stay classics like The Wizard of Oz, Grease and Scrooge (of course). The songs in this are great, very entertaining, fun and full of life. It would be a real treat for this film to get re-mastered in HD for a special Blu-Ray edition. HDNET has played this classic in HD the past ... Read More

I saw this for the first time in theatres when I was just 5 or 6 and it captivated me. Several more years than I like to think later, it's still the best take on Dickens' classic tale I've ever seen. I just saw the Disney remake with Jim Carrey this afternoon, and I still prefer Sir Albert Finney. This one is more faithful to the source material, less politically correct, and just a lot more fun. Tiny Tim is beautiful and angelic, Bob Crachit is just as we always envisioned him, and I have to strongly ... Read More

As expected, Albert Finney is extraordinary in his portrayal of Scrooge and Alec Guiness is both frightening (not too scary) and hilarious as Marley's Ghost. As is the case with all of the truly classic films, the casting (including the host of no names) is superb. Each character is completely believable. Likewise, the music fits very appropriately into the story-line, as it does in other musical classics such as "Fiddler on the Roof". It is not the typical musical where you have some progress in the ... Read More
