Editorial Review:
Product Description: SPRUCED UP ADAPTATION OF LEO TOLSTOY'S EPIC NOVEL ABOUT THE LIFE OF A RUSSIAN FAMILY DURING THE WAR OF 1812.
Amazon.com: Despite its reputation as an oversimplified epic, King Vidor's War and Peace remains a stellar showcase of Hollywood prestige. While Cecil B. De Mille was reviving ancient Egypt for The Ten Commandments, Vidor was transforming Italian countryside into war-torn Russia, bringing massive resources to bear on this sumptuous, if ultimately misguided adaptation of Tolstoy's classic. Given the marquee casting of Audrey Hepburn as Natasha and then-husband Mel Ferrer as decorated battle hero Prince Andrei, this is a movie you watch for star value, not literary fidelity (for the latter, look to Sergei Bondarchuk's Russian version). Henry Fonda serves Tolstoy more effectively as Pierre, whose passive observation of Napoleon's invasion turns this grand moral tale into an intimate study of individual passions. The battle scenes (directed by Mario Soldati) remain impressive, as does the film's grand parade of pomp and circumstance. Slow, regal, and peppered with brilliance, this epic falls short of classic but it's still a visual feast. --Jeff Shannon

One has to wonder if the screenplay writers of this movie ever read the book? They turn this multi character epic into a Hollywood love story and completely miss the varied perspective that makes this story a great one. Watch the Sergei Bondarchuk version if you want to see this as it should be. The BBC version is closer to the book but I feel the Sergei Bondarchuk version makes a better movie while still staying true to the gist of the original story.
Shame on Hollywood for ruining this classic.

No it isnt the book but nevertheless its a ripping good yarn. Henry Fonda does well as Pierre, Mel Ferrer is also good Audrey Hepburn was annoying at first but got better as the film progressed. The final scenes of the defeated french Army in retreat are great. Herbert Lom does a good Napoleon too. Worth looking at not for accuracy to the novel but just as a great film from the golden age of Hollywood. (For accuracy go to the Anthony Hopkins BBC production or the Sergei Bodnerchuck versions.) But give this ... Read More

I was tempted to title this 'Tolstoy for Dummies" but that would have been too mean. In truth, I did not buy this film, but found it, free at the public library. So I can't complain too much.
I was a bit surprised (shocked?) at the cast...Henry Fonda? Mel Ferrer?
But it was free and so I watched it one summer night when I didn't have anything else to do. Low expectations make for happy surprises. Henry Fonda has the most American, nasal, reedy, accent but after a while I could get past ... Read More

Liberty and Tyranny is the book I have ever read. It is a wonderful foundation of knowledge regarding our constitutional system. Everyone should have to read it! I rate it as the Best Seller of our life times!
