The Man of a Thousand Faces wears his own rugged countenance in this rousing pair of silent melodramas from the early 1920s. Though typically known for his heavily made-up portrayals of monstrous villains and disabled outcasts, Lon Chaney plays the noble leading man in the gorgeously filmed Nomads of the North, adapted from James Oliver Curwood's timeless tale of love and murder on the lush Canadian frontier. Chaney is heroic as he saves his beloved Nanette (Betty Blythe) from a snidely suitor, but he's nearly upstaged by the adorable pets Brimstone and Neela, a black Labrador and brown bear cub (respectively) who survive river rapids, cougars, and the film's climactic (and genuinely dangerous) forest inferno. The Shock finds Chaney in familiar "cripple" mode as an underworld denizen seeking redemption, foiling the dragon queen of San Francisco's Chinatown and winning the heart of a sympathetic beauty. Vague shades of Quasimodo here, and Chaney's follow-up was the classic Hunchback of Notre Dame. --Jeff Shannon

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Lon finally gets the girl
Of the two films on this disc, I prefer 1923's 'The Shock.' Like in many of his other films, Lon Chaney also plays a villain, though uncharacteristically, there's a surprisingly quick metamorphosis from hardened criminal to reformed good guy. He always played his characters with such convincing heart and soul, making even criminals and villains seem multi-faceted, with a softer and more human side to them deep down. I think this film would have worked just as well had Lon played just that type ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The great Chaney
These two films show a non-monstrous Chaney, giving viewers a chance to see his real face (though in the first film, he's wearing a mop of a wig that's unintentionally funny).

In "Nomads" Chaney is the leading man, Raoul, whose fiancee is led to believe that he is dead. Raoul comes upon her in the midst of a wedding ceremony to the evil "other man", leading to complications that cause the two lovers, married hastily, to flee their small Canadian town for the woods. The pet animals in ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Wilderness and God
Nomads of the North is a film starring Lon Chaney and Betty Blythe as lovers in the wilds of Canada. Blythe is wanted by another man, a wealthy man who is willing to forgive her family's debts, but her love for Chaney keeps her loyal. The wealthy man cons another into claiming Blythe's love is dead, causing her to accept his proposal. In the nick of time, though, Chaney arrives with his pet puppy and baby bear, taking Blythe away from deciet. However, he accidentally kills a man in a fight and is ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Two great films with a great actor!
These two excellent films from the early 1920s feature Lon Chaney without any disguises or make-up, but still as impressive as in his more famous roles such as the Phantom of the Opera. In both of these films his acting is very expressive, and in "The Shock" he is extremely convincing as a cripple in a wheelchair and the crook who turns good.

"Nomads of the North" has many lovely scenes of the Canadian wilderness and for animal lovers there are several nice scenes of a cute bear cub ... Read More
