Amazon.com essential video: This 1954 musical remake of Four Daughters stars Doris Day as a well-bred New England woman who marries a chip-on-his-shoulder musician (Frank Sinatra). Lots of tears, yes, but this version of Fannie Hurst's novel is considerably cheered up from the 1938 tearjerker. Dorothy Malone and Elizabeth Fraser play Day's sisters (a fourth sister present in Four Daughters was written out), Robert Keith is the paterfamilias to a bunch of musical prodigies, and Gig Young is entertaining as the composer-boarder who tries deflecting the sisters' interest in him by bringing Sinatra home one day. Both Day and Sinatra really shine in this, and the songs include the Johnny Richards-Caroline Leigh title tune, which became part of Sinatra's standard repertoire. --Tom Keogh

I would be very interested in hearing the story of how this film transferred ownership from Warner Bros. to Republic Pictures. I am assuming it's a copyright lapse situation but unlike other films Republic has picked up this movie has suffered in quality not to mention having it's opening and ending chopped off to avoid any mention of it being a previous Warner Bros. product. Republic has "That Touch of Mink" from Universal and it is in tack with Universal signature and a supurb print. What gives? ... Read More

This movie seems to be an attempt to make a popular musical of an
Elvis type using Doris Day at her best as the lead female.
The casting and music / songs are great,
but setting this in an Eastern Ivy college town in the 50's
was a major mistake. The result compared to Frankie as trying to kill the president or as a hooked big city junky ( or one of his other 50's comeback films) is just too tame by comparison.
Just too "wholesome" and all American white middle class:

Doris Day is the lead character-- Laurie Tuttle, an unmarried woman living at home with her father, aunt, and sisters. This movie is about love and how each character finds love and loves in a certain way. I have enjoyed Doris Day's comedy, but being young, I had never heard her sing before. I was truly surprised to hear such a sweet voice. I got this movie just so I could see Frank Sinatra sing "Someone To Watch Over Me". Sinatra doesn't disappoint--he becomes one with his character Barney Sloan, a moody ... Read More
