Product Description:
The adventures of Joanna Dark, Nintendo's favorite superspy, have made the jump from the Nintendo 64 to the Game Boy Color. Unfortunately, despite having some occasionally interesting gameplay and okay visuals, this Perfect Dark is a huge misfire that disappoints on many levels.

Sneaking about and trying to take out the enemy is the secret agent's art and should be fun in itself. Tragically, it becomes almost immediately apparent that the use of stealth here is less than an exact science. It's too hard to tell whether or not the enemy can hear or see you. Combined with mushy controls and inaccurate targeting for the gunfights, what you have is a game that feels unfinished and rushed. The action switches to a first-person view for target practice and for picking off enemies in sniper mode. These few-and-far-between moments feel like they might've been "borrowed" from another game entirely.

The sound effects, for the most part, consist of the usual gun blasts and mortally wounded soldiers screaming "Medic!" and other cries of agony. There is quite a bit of speech in the between-level mission briefings. Unfortunately, the Game Boy speaker is so pitifully lame that nearly every sound is garbled and devastatingly warped. Even Joanna's death moan is a comical, high-pitched chirp.

Perfect Dark allows you to exchange data and unlocked maps with a friend's copy of the game via the Game Boy Color's infrared port. You can also engage in two-player deathmatches on special maps via the separately sold Game Link cable. The only problem is that while the maps are decently drawn and a human opponent is (hopefully) smarter than the Game Boy, the same control issues of solo play still linger.

One redeeming quality of Perfect Dark for the GBC is its compatibility with the N64 Perfect Dark via Ni

One redeeming quality of Perfect Dark for the GBC is its compatibility with the N64 Perfect Dark via Nintendo's Transfer Pak, which supplies easy access to guns and other cheats. --Mark Brooks

Pros:
  • Access to weapons and other cheats of Perfect Dark for the N64 via the Transfer Pak
  • It's in color
Cons:
  • Mushy controls and inaccurate firing
  • Horrendous sound effects
  • Thoroughly forgettable and unremarkable

Amazon.co.uk:
When Rare released Perfect Dark on the N64, nobody thought that they would expand the popular game further and include a GameBoy version, but they have, and it shines.

You play Joanna Dark in what's a prequel to the original N64 version. Based in the training center at the Carrington Institute, you have to complete a number of training missions before you are given a mission to investigate an illegal cyborg factory in South America.

The transfer to the GameBoy is superb, offering a nice twist to the Perfect Dark tale. The gameplay is similar to that of Metal Gear Solid, with your time spent walking around, searching bodies and dark alleyways, as well as completing the training sessions presented to you. Couple this with minigames and logical puzzles, and the overall package becomes very nice indeed.

As if it weren't enough to include new missions not featured in the N64, the GameBoy version comes with a rumble pack built into the game as well as the option to link up with other GameBoys for multiplayer options. The rumble pack offers a similar experience to that of the console games and gives you that little bit extra to what is already a great game.

Perfect Dark is a great addition to anyone's GameBoy collection, and with the age range lowered on the GameBoy version to 11 and older, it opens up the world of Perfect Dark to an whole host of new people. Yet that isn't to say that this game won't appeal to an older generation of gamers. --Stuart Miles

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Perfect Dark on GBC
Through-out all the GBC games, this is probably the most unique of the bunch. More importantly, this is probably the only one with full voice over. More than once have I completed the game, so I geuss you could call it kind of addicting. So here you go, my review on Perfect Dark.

Story: Joanna Dark, the hero from the #1 smash hit Perfect Dark, for N64 has returned in the prequal on GBC. Saldly, the story hasn't got the same flare as its prodecesser. Through-out her adventure, Joanna ... Read More

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Pretty good nowhere near a classic like the N64 one though.
This is a decent game but the Nintendo 64 version blows it completely out of the water.I mean I could really use a combat simulator to play when Im stuck in the main game but still there are some great action scenes. The graphics and sound are terrible though.I suggest you skip this one unless youre a die hard Perfect Dark fan.You should get Super Mario Deluxe instead at least that is more fun.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Bypass this one, holmes
There is nothing perfect about this game, so that right there is false advertising. Anyway, how fun can a game be that allows you to get shot from an enemy who is shooting you while rushing in from off screen? Sound fun? Well, no, it's not. Gameboy color games are pretty weak across the board...I'd stick to the Advance. Perfect Dark is just [mindless].

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - It ain't perfect, but still decent
Perfect Dark was one of the few games on the Nintendo 64 worth playing that wasn't designed for little kids, and while the GameBoy version doesn't hold a candle to its N64 cousin, its still pretty decent. Instead of a first-person perspective like in the N64 version, its played with a top-down version and missions and gameplay similar to Metal Gear Solid. However, there are some major glitches. Targeting your enemy is complete hell, and when you have to use stealth is even more hellish because ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Solid game with glitches
I don't know why so many people hate this game! . While not perfect (the sound and controls get more and more annoying throughout the levels), it is a great way to pass time as you will take quite a while to finish it (I've already owned the cartridge for almost a year and still haven't unlocked all the secrets!). Although the training is near impossible for newbies, especially stealth training, the actual stages and extras are fun to play and complete. And there are so many modes! You get to speed ...
