Album Description: Behind the Mask is a collection of 11 original songs composed and performed by John Seth Sherman. Showcasing his acoustic stage performances in a studio setting, the CD features full instrumentation with (nearly) all acoustic sounds - no synthesizers, digitizing, sequencing, looping or drum machines - every sound on this record is moving air, excepting the electric bass. The songs cover a wide range of musical styles, always with the evocative, solid underpinning of a dynamic rhythm section. From the rockabilly bounce of Love in the Car (1), the modern folk rock sound of Little White Lies (2), Take Off those Cold Shoes (8) and Behind the Mask (5), through the jazz influenced romp of Ride Out the Storm (3) and When Will I Find Her? (9), into the more bluesy jazz rock of The Shape of A Woman (6) and Willie and Lucky (10), the lyrics and melodies share a sense of the timeless musical influences of the composer, from jazz, folk, blues, R & B, pop and rock & roll. This is one of those albums that sounds better everytime you listen to it! Sherman's smooth vocal performances and acoustic six and 12 string guitar stylings receive strong support from the rhythm section of Jim Norris on drums and Dennis Murphy on bass, fretless bass and piccolo bass solos. Jim and Dennis are seasoned veterans from Santa Cruz/Monterey, California who are known and respected for their solid musical contributions to local San Francisco Bay Area artists as well as nationally known recording artists such as Lacy J. Dalton, Maria Muldaur, Billy Preston and Acoustic Alchemy. On eight of the tracks, Andrew Sherman provides acoustic piano (a beautiful 1885 Steinway Grand) and Hammond B-3 organ (through a vintage Leslie speaker cabinet.) Andrew's prowess on keyboards is well known throughout jazz and R & B/pop circles; he has recorded and toured with Dizzy Gillespie, Najee, Lala Hathaway, Brian McKnight and Mariah Carey, along with many other artists. Danny Hull, a longtime member of the Doobie Brothers, contributes tenor saxophone on two of the songs; local legend Scott Owens adds the solo guitar on one of the more driving, bluesy tracks.
Additional vocal support is provided by Janet Myatt and Donna Wishon, two women whose lovely visages are exceeded by the sonorous qualities of their voices. Mick Overman, a talented veteran touring and recording artist known for his voluminous touring schedule, lends his vocal ability as half of the conversational Willie and Lucky. The entire project is obviously an affair of the heart and soul of John Seth Sherman, an artist who has let his love for music and people lead him through a life of laughter and pain, love and growth, always with an eye, an ear and an understanding of the complexity and depth of humanity and the intrinsic qualities of people's relationships.

This is my favorite CD, and I like it better the more I hear it. If you like classic rock, jazz, blues, even folk and country, you'll enjoy this collection. The songs cover a wide variety of styles and subjects, but are all performed with the same high standards, and a great deal of talent and emotion. Although I'm a big fan of his solo work, I love the accompaniment John chose for this album. And as much as I love acoustic guitar, Andrew Sherman's piano really gets to me, too.
